Scouting’s Sunrise

Thursday, August 2nd, 2007

I got up early yesterday and drove to the top of the Feldberg. I was on the lookout for Scouts celebrating the 100th anniversary of the very first Scout camp, and therefore 100 years of Scouting itself.

I had received a hot tip, that there would be some there, and although I didn’t find the group that I was expecting to, members of the DPSG from Idstein were there and did celebrate at exactly 8am local time.

They lit a fire, flew the DPSG flat and renewed their promises – each one striking their troop bell afterwards.

It was a simple but moving experience, that was repeated around the World.

I returned home in time to listen to a live audio transmission of the same ceremony taking place on Brownsea Island in Dorset [Link] and later in the day was able to watch this online.
