Walls in the woods

I have been puzzled for a long time by some walls in the woods near our flat.

The bricks used make me think they are from the 1930s, and they are built in a row like the pillars of a road bridge - but to my knowledge no road has ever gone through these woods.

When I took some photos of them the other day I spotted that one of them has a metal spike on it with something that looks like an old-fashioned television aerial. Did telegraph wires used to connect to it?

The walls can even be seen on the aerial view in Google Maps.

Can anyone tell me what this used to be?

  1. Maria Says:

I contacted one of the locals and he knew about the walls’ existence, but also promised to find out more.
He says: “Below the wall there are trenches from WWII. The ditches and the walls might have been built together.”
He promised he would go and find out.

    Will keep you posted.

This is almost like a “Schnitzeljagd”…
    Anyway, here is the answer:
This areal has belonged to the local gun club since about 1900. At first it was used for shooting practise by the vigilantes. After the war, that same group formed the gun club as it is today.
Back then the shooting range used to be 300 meters, getting very close to the local animal shelter (which is also hidden behind there in the woods). Today’s range only measures about 100 meters.
These walls had been built for protection due to missed targets and noise reduction.
