Last bid attempt to save the station kiosk fails

Following an appeal by local bus drivers and engaged members of the public, including discussions on Facebook, a member of the town council representing the party “Die Linke” put forward an urgent motion to extend the lease on the kiosk at the station at the council meeting last Thursday (22nd November, 2012).

The motion received the two-thirds majority that it required to be accepted onto the agenda, with all councillors voting in favour of its addition with the exception of one councillor from the CDU party who voted against it.

But with the town’s budget to be debated first, it was not until three hours later that the councillors actually got round to discussing the motion itself. [Read more…]

Recipients of the Citizens’ Medal 2012

The citizens’ medals 2012 were awarded to:

1. Manfred Kopp for his work as a local historian, which includes putting together the archive of documents about Camp King, 1933-1993.  The archive is due to be re-located to its new permanent home in the “Kinderhaus”, previously known as “House Florida”.  Since 2003 he has also been responsible for training the town guides (“Stadtführer”) and he himself offers several tours of the Camp King area each year.

2. Inge and Dr. Eberhard Laeuen, who were among the initiators of the working group “Nie wieder 1933” (never again 1933), which was set up in 1981 to research and document the crimes that took place during the Nazi period in Oberursel.  They were also among the initiators of the “Initiative Opferdenkmal e.V.” (victims’ memorial) foundation in 2008, whose aim is to create a lasting memorial for the victims of the National Socialist regime who came from the town.

They received their medals during the Bürgerempfang in November 2012.

The Rotary Club Youth Prize 2012

The Rotary Club Youth Prize (Förderpreis) in 2012 was awarded to:

1. Tim Leinert, for organising an open air film festival in the Rushmoor Park which centred around regional up-coming media talent.

2. Jessica Wüst, respresenting the students who provide homework assistance at the primary school “Grunschule Mitte”, accompanied by teacher Marianne Brodbeck.

The presentation was made by Reiner Göpfert of Oberursel’s Rotary Club.

Oberursel Christmas Market (Weihnachtsmarkt)

Sweets beings sold at Oberursel Christmas Market 2011The 2012 Christmas Market (Weihnachtsmarkt) in Oberursel starts on Thursday, 29th November and continues until Sunday, 2nd December.

The market is open Thursday 4pm-9pm, Friday 2pm-10pm, Saturday 12pm-10pm and Sunday 12pm-9pm, and takes place in front of the town hall (Rathausplatz), along the “Vorstadt” and “Strackgasse”, and on the market square (“Marktplatz”) with around 100 stands in total.

The Marktplatz is the location for the “middle-ages” market, whereas a miniature steam train will be offering rides on the Rathausplatz.

Arts and Crafts

Inside the town hall an arts and crafts fair will be taking place with around 40 stands, including those from the twin towns of Epinay-sur-Seine, Rushmoor and Lomonossow.  The fair closes an hour before the Christmas market, except on Thursday.

The “Hospitalkirche” Church in the Strackgasse will be hosting a series of concerts over the weekend, with entry free but a donation requested.

Friday 6pm: Flute ensemble from Oberursel music school

Saturday 6pm: Crotchets – the Klezmerensemble of Oberursel’s music school

Sunday 6pm: Youth orchestra and recorder group from the TV Stierstadt.

Advent market in the museum

The Vortaunusmuseum at the Marktplatz will be holding an advent market on Saturday 10am-6pm and Sunday 12pm-6pm.

Seniorentreff

The “Seniorentreff” will be holding their own Christmas market at Hospitalstraße 9, where they will be selling knitted socks and other hand-made items.  There will also be refreshments available including mulled wine.  The opening times are: Friday 2pm-9pm and Saturday 10am-9pm.

4 Rooms Open Air Winter Party

The Café Portstrasse will be holding an “Open Air Winter Party” next to the U-Bahn stop “Altstadt” on Thursday between 6pm and 8.30pm, with hot drinks, music, twists, sausages, and a fire show and young people from all parts of the town are invited to start or end their Christmas market tour here.

Road closures

The following roads will be closed during the Christmas Market opening times:

  • Obere Vorstadt
  • Obere Strackgasse
  • Untere Marktplatzstraße

The  Untere Hainstraße will be open to two-way traffic.

The Ackergasse will be closed where it meets the Schlenkergasse, allowing traffic to flow via the Schlenkergasse and Weidengasse.

The car park next to the town hall will be closed from Tuesday, 27th November.

The normal market on Wednesday and Saturday will be moved to the Epinayplatz.

€2,500 for the Ehrenmal restoration project

More than 2,500 Euro were raised on “Volkstrauertag” – the German equivalent of Remembrance Sunday – by a concert held in the Christuskirche Church to support the restoration of the “Ehrenmal” – the war memorial dedicated to those from Oberursel who lost their lives in the First World War.

Before the concert got underway, the manager of the Ursella-Foundation, Dr. Justus Förschner, explained the current state of the monument, which has been stabilised by filling the hollow base and column with cement.  He also went into detail of why it will take some time for the pieces of the mosaic to be re-applied, work that is to be undertaken by a special company from Eppstein (Matthias Steyer).  He believes that the work will be finished by the spring of next year. Warning against fake pipe inspectors

Oberursel’s town hall has issued a warning against a company who claim to inspect water and/or sewage pipes and their connections to private property.  The company claim that they have been asked to do this by a public office.

The town hall stresses that neither they nor their infrastructure subsidiary (BSO) have commissioned any such work on private connections to the system.

Entry costs €5.

Take a tour of Oberursel’s old town

The Bleiche in Oberursels old townA tour of the old town (Altstadt) part of Oberursel is being offered on Saturday, 1st December, 2012 at 2pm.

The tour starts in front of the Vortaunusmuseum at the Marktplatz at 2pm and costs €3 per person.

Being the start of Advent, the tour will be slightly different, Advent and Christmas poems being read and home-made biscuits to eat.

Tuesday night cinema at Bluebox Portstraße

As the organisation is not a commercial cinema, they are not allowed to advertise which film will be shown in advance. For Tuesday, 27th November 2012, we are told that it will be a “documentary”. If you do want to know which film will be shown then call 06171 636930 and they will tell you.

The showing starts at 9pm.
