Beware of the Stingray

One of the fascinating things to do after a meal in Puerto del Carmen is to take a walk to the harbour.  Here, you will see masses of small fish.  If you throw them some scraps of bread, then they will not only fight over it, they will even jump out of the water in the process.

It might almost seem as if these fish spend their entire lives in the harbour, waiting to be fed.

This fact has not gone unnoticed, and every now and then a stingray comes into the harbour to feed on the fish.

Until now I considered myself lucky if I caught a glimpse of it.  Now, I know that stingrays can be dangerous because of their barb, but I thought that I was quite safe standing on the harbour wall.

That way, until I read this article on the BBC News website.  A stingray swimming off the Florida Keys jumped out of the water and onto a boat, killing someone in the process.  Apparently, this is not the first time that one has jumped out of the water and into a boat, and I immediately thought back to the one I had seen in Puerto del Carmen.

Could it jump out of the water if it wanted to?  I’ll be standing a little further back from the edge next time…

Emma’s Cantina Mexicana in Puerto del Carmen

I passed Emma’s Cantina Mexicana in the old part of Puerto del Carmen last year, and was tempted to go in and try it.  Unfortunately, on the evening that I was planning to go there it was closed, so I didn’t actually get to.

However, I hear it comes highly recommended, and allegedly has the only native Mexican chef on the island – which considering the number of tex-mex restaurants is quite a feat in itself.

So since I won’t be going back there myself this year, perhaps anyone who goes there could leave a short comment on this blog and tell me how it is?   Go on, make me jealous!

Lani’s Indian Tandoori, Puerto del Carmen

Lani’s is a chain of restaurants on Lanzarote. Each restaurant has a culinary theme on which the menu is based.

If you follow the Avenida de la Playas long enough, you eventually come to Lani’s Indian Tandoori, serving a variety of Indian dishes, but also a selection of standard cuisine for people prefer something else. This can be useful if you are in a group and not everyone is into Indian food – other Indian restaurants tend only to have Indian dishes and are therefore not so suitable.

Although the food is good, I find this restaurant a bit pricey – starting from the bread rolls and butter, and continuing with the size of the portions and the fact that for most things you have to pay extra for rice. So to make it worthwhile, you really do want to have good Indian food in a restaurant that is not doing exclusively that.

Unfortunately, the German translation of the menu takes some deciphering as it is often a literal translation from English, leaving the German tourist completely baffled as to what is on offer.

For visitors to the old town of Puerto del Carmen it is also a long way to walk (about 45 minutes, if you don’t stop to look at the souvenir shops on the way!).
