The Eurovision Song Contest in Düsseldorf

When I was studying in Birmingham, there was always a rumour going around that if the UK ever won the Eurovision Song Contest, the city would be the host for the following year.

Of course, the UK never did win during those years, but I had hardly moved to Germany when Katrina and the Waves did indeed bring the contest to Birmingham, and I had to watch it with a German commentary.

So when Germany won the contest last year I was rather hoping that Frankfurt would get be on the shortlist of contenders for the 2011 competition. [Read more…]

Hessentag in Oberursel – the permit

The Hessentag trailer parked outside the RathausRegular readers of this blog will by now know that the Hessentag will be taking place in Oberursel this year – in a few weeks in fact – and that I had been having trouble getting a permit to enter the town during that time to by able to visit my IT clients.

Not only has there been a lack of information for business owners in my opinion, but even when I spoke to the town’s mayor it did not change the situation much.

When I first tried to apply for a permit in February, I was told that it would not be possible before 1st April.  I was also told that I would need an ID card to apply – something that I do not have, and my British passport unfortunately does not show my address.  This was my first point of discussion, that someone had decided you needed a German ID card to get a permit. Fernseh-Tipp: Kein schöner Land

Am kommenden Montag, den 9. Mai, gibt es im deutschen Fernsehen eine weitere Sendung über Lanzarote zu sehen.

Unter dem Titel “Kein schöner Land” präsentiert Günter Wewel im HR-Fernsehen typische Folklore der Insel.  Es singen Künstler von Lanzarote wie Los Buches, Charco de San Gines und Dulce Hernandez Martin aber auch die deutsche Schlagersängerin Nicole.

Als Kulisse dienen unter anderem der Nationalpark Timanfaya sowie der Mirador del Rio.

“Kein schöner Land” wird um 20.15 gesendet.
