Der Kaktusgarten (Jardín de Cactus) befindet sich am nördlichen Ende von Guatiza, auf der östlichen Seite der Straße LZ-1 nach Mala – nicht zu verwechseln mit der Umgehungsstraße die an beiden Orten vorbeiführt.

Der Garten wurde von César Manrique entworfen und im Jahr 1990 eröffnet (zumindest steht es im offiziellen Reiseführer auf Spanisch so.  Andere Quellen geben das Jahr 1991 an).  Daher ist es auch das letzte von Manriques “Zentren” das eröffnet wurde.  Im Garten befinden sich über 1.000 Arten von Kakteen.  Einige stammen direkt von Lanzarote oder einer der anderen kanarischen Inseln, aber viele kommen auch aus dem Ausland, manche sogar aus Südamerika.

The Cactus Garden – Jardín de Cactus

The Cactus Garden at Guatiza on LanzaroteThe Cactus Garden (Jardín de Cactus) is located at the northern end of Guatiza, on the eastern side of the LZ-1 road that leads to Mala – not to be confused with the new by-pass that goes around both towns.

The garden was designed by César Manrique and opened in 1990 (according to the official Spanish guidebook. Many sources quote 1991) and as such was the last of Manrique’s “centres” to open.  Inside there are over 1,000 different species of cacti.  Some of them are indigenous to the island, but many come from as far away as South America.

Oberursel’s “Day of the Bicycle”

Oberursel is a very bicycle-friendly town.  We have new cycle paths running along the Hohemarkstraße (albeit with some traffic lights that often get ignored), a major cycle race passes through the town each year, you can hire bikes at the new Taunus Information Centre, and there were even special signs and stands for cyclists at the Hessentag last year.

And then there is the Tag des Fahrrads – the day of the bicycle, which was held last weekend on Sunday at the Stadthalle.  More than 1,000 people turned up to find out more about using GPS navigation, places to visit in the summer, e-bikes (pedelecs), or simply just to find out what models the local dealers have on offer.

The event was organised by the town itself and the local brance of the cycle club ADFC, who were also on hand to “code” visitors’ bike. [Read more…]
