Circus Renz Manege

Yesterday I was invited to a performance of Circus Renz Manege in Bad Homburg.  The circus is only there for 3 days and I attended the Saturday afternoon performance with my daughter.

The circus had taken over the Festplatz for the week (known to many as the fun fair at Laternenfest), which made parking a little difficult, but we were early enough to find something in the streets on the Kirdorf side.

Inside the foyer there was popcorn and drinks on sale, before we entered the tunnel leading into the big top.

This was split into three seating categories, with the Sperrsitz the cheapest and located either side of the performers’ entrance, the 2. Loge the “normal” ring of seating and a few rows called the 1. Loge directly in front of the circus ring (called the Manege in German). [Read more…]

Children in Germany can now be seen AND heard

Shhhhh! - ©iStockphoto.com/rtiomUntil recently, children in Germany were restricted in how loud they could be when playing, and being too loud could land someone in court.

For a private household, there is the ever-present problem of the local Rühezeiten, but if a group of children were playing together, then their level of noise could put them on a par with a factory building.

So building a playground or even a Kindergarten near a housing estate was a risky business, because there was always the chance that someone might start proceedings just because the children were too loud.

Of course, you could wonder who would be so annoyed by the sound of children playing, that they feel the need to go to court.

St. Martin’s Church in Canterbury

Die St. Martin’s Church ist die älteste Kirche in England in der noch Gottesdienste regelmäßig abgehalten werden.

Die Kirche befindet sich in Canterbury, außerhalb der Stadtmitte, auf der östlichen Seite der North Holmes Road, das ist von der Kathedrale aus etwa 10 Min. Fußweg.

Durch ihr Alter hat sie Baumerkmale in sich, die die meisten anderen Kirchen in der Umgebung nicht mehr haben. So zum Beispiel ein Lychgate, das soviel wie Leichentor heißt, ist eine Art Gatter mit einem dreieckigen Holzdach und einem Kreuz an der Spitze. Durch dieses Tor kommt man zum Friedhof. Auch das Leper Window gehört dazu. Es ist ein Fenster in der Kirchenmauer für Leprakranke und andere Ausgeschlossene, das zur Friedhofseite hinaus geht.

Heute freut sich die St. Martin’s Church über Besucher und auch Kinder und man kann auch Gruppenführungen buchen. Auf der Webseite findet man dazu noch mehr Informationen. Das Rauchen und Hunde sind jedoch in der Kirche verboten. Geöffnet hat sie ganzjährig am Dienstag, Donnerstag und Samstag von 11-15Uhr und Sonntags von 9:50-10:30Uhr. Auch hier vorher auf der Homepage nachschauen. Der Eintritt ist frei, aber über Spenden freut man sich natürlich.
