Our topic in October is the DDR – the Deutsche Demokratische Republik.

The DDR (GDR in English) existed from 7th October 1949 until 2nd October 1990 and was created out of the Soviet occupation zone as a repsonse to the creation of the German Federal Republic several weeks earlier.

Today we talk about the creation and the economic and political systems that we set in place in the DDR and how the country was structured.  We also talk our own personal experiences when visiting the country.

TestDaF

The TestDaf is a standardised test that allows learners of German to have their knowledge of the language assessed.

The assessment is given as a numerical value called the TDN – Test DaF Niveau. The TDN scale goes from 1 to 5.

Some organisations may require applicants to show proof of having taken a TestDaf test as opposed to other levels that we have talked about during this month.

Stonehenge

Stonehenge ist ein faszinierendes Bauwerk das über Jahrtausende erbaut und oftmals verändert und erweitert wurde.

Es gibt mehrere Theorien wofür Stonehenge benutzt wurde, einmal als religiöser Ort bzw. als Grabstätte zum anderen wurden die Steine so ausgerichtet, dass an der Sonneneinstrahlung die Jahreszeiten erkannt werden konnten. Millionen Menschen haben in der langen Zeit diese Steine herbeischafft und aufgerichtet.

Eine erste schriftliche Erwähnung gab es im 12. Jahrhundert. Die Erbauung fand 1000-3000 Jahren vor Christus statt. Ab dem Ende des 16. Jahrhunderts wurden Forschungen angstellt, wer, warum und wann Stonehenge erbaut wurde. 1984 wurde Stonehenge von der UNESCO zum Weltkulturerbe erklärt. Heute ist  Stonehenge eine Touristenattraktion die man sich nicht entgehen lassen sollte. Für manche Menschen hat Stonehenge noch eine religiöse Bedeutung. Noch mehr geschichtlichen Hintergrund und Information zur Erbauung können Sie hier erfahren.

Ich selbst war noch nicht da, aber bei einem der nächsten Besuche wird sich das sicherlich ändern. Dass Stonehenge ein kreisförmiges Bauwerk ist habe ich erst durch meine Recherchen erfahren und es ist wirklich bewundernswert wie die Menschen dies geschaffen haben.
