Bad Homburger Sommer

The “Bad Homburger Sommer” takes place each summer in Bad Homburg over the space of two weeks. This year it starts on 30th June and finishes with a big firework display on 15th July.

There are open-air film showings, concerts in the park, games and participation-theatres for children and even a flea market.

Most of the events are free to the public as they are sponsored by local businesses, although there are a few ticketed events – but even they have reasonable prices.

Here are some of the highlights:

  • Nachttheater im Schloss – Die drei Musketiere
  • Hexenzauber in Ober-Erlenbach
  • Sommernachtsball (kostenpflichtig)
  • Flohmarkt im Kurpark
  • Kinder-Lieder-Mitmach-Theater “Pitsch, Patsch, Pinguin”
  • Open Air Kino: Charlie und die Schokoladenfabrik
  • Kurpark in Flammen

Hotel offers East German experience

A hotel in Berlin is offering the chance to experience a piece of East-German life.

“Ostel” gives its visitors some idea of what life was like under communisim, and is located within a typical “Plattenbau”.

With prices starting at 9EUR per Person (in a shared room), this also looks like being a good place for visitors on a low-budget to go, who can save and take in a bit of nostalgia at the same time. It is located near the Ostbahnhof in the Wriezener Karree.

Das Einwohnermeldeamt

Today in our new podcast, German Words Explained, we explain the word “Einwohnermeldeamt“.

This is the office that you have to report to when you come to Germany in order to register your address and apply for your residence permit.

It is usually located in the town hall, or Rathaus, but may also be in a Bürgeramt.

You should take your passport with you. When you apply for your permit(s) you will need to take other paperwork with you, such as a rental contract for your flat or your employment contract.
