What are you doing on the 15th of May this year?

I received an invitation the other day to join this facebook group – which promotes the panic buying of carrots on 15th May this year.

Why????

Well, what started as a crazy idea may have caused a shortage of carrots if they hadn’t warned everybody, but with over 170,000 members in the group, this certainly isn’t a secret any longer.
Several news channels have picked up the story and are now telling the world.  There are even plans to turn the carrots into soup, cake and juice and to donate these to the homeless in the South of England.
It amazes me that something that started out as a silly idea, has created such media attention and could turn out to be such a big event.
I’ll be keeping an eye on the calendar to see how it turns out.

Tasty skin

The title “Tasty skin” may make you think of crispy potato skins, but this week I read an article about an animal that also has an edible skin – the caecilian female feeds its young by letting them peel off bits of its skin, which contain the nutrients for it to grow.
It makes my skin itch just to think about it!

Berliner

Berliners are a form of doughnut, often filled with jam.

The story of their invention is possibly only a legend, but it is said that they were created by a baker from Berlin who was trying to create something that could be cooked on a battlefield without an oven. He placed the balls of dough into hot fat to create the form that we know today.

The Konditorberliner in Hessen are normally filled with raspberry jam, but at carnival time there are Berliners without jam, with strawberry jam, iced, with coffee or even alcohol creams in them.

Other words for Berliner are: Krapfen, Kreppel and Fastnachtsküchle.
