Bei meiner letzten Reise nach Lanzarote habe ich es geschafft etwas dort zu lassen – meine Deutsche SIM-Karte, die ich gegen eine andere ausgetauscht hatte, um günstiger ins Internet zu gehen.  Entweder ist sie in der Ferienwohnung liegengeblieben, oder sie ist im Flughafen aus meinem Handgepäck gefallen.  Jedenfalls habe ich den Verlust erst in Deutschland bemerkt.

Nachdem ich die Karte gesperrt und einen Ersatz bestellt hatte, wollte ich trotzdem wissen, ob ich sie im Flughafen in Arrecife verloren hatte und versuchte dort im Fundbüro anzurufen.

My first experience of the Lost Property Office in Arrecife airport

Check-in desks at Arrecife airportOn my last visit to Lanzarote I managed to leave something behind – my SIM card that I had swapped over during our stay so as to use one that offered cheaper internet access.  Either I left it behind in the flat that we were staying in, or it dropped out of my hand luggage when I was sorting out our flight tickets.  I only realised when I got back to Germany.

Having deactivated the card and ordered a replacement, I was still curious to know if I really had lost it in the airport at Arrecife, so I tried to call the lost property office. [Read more…]

How marks are decided in German primary schools

The German school system has, on the face of it, a fairly simple marking arrangement.  The marks for a piece of work are given on a scale of 1 to 6, with 1 being the highest and 6 the lowest.

The numbers 1 to 6 roughly correspond to A to F in the British system as well, although 5 is usually the lowest that will be given for anyone actually completing the work or a test, with 6 reserved for those who don’t do it at all.  There are also the + and – grades in-between.

But how do the marks get decided for each child in the first place?
