Buying a piece of wood on Lanzarote

Broken piece of chipboard on LanzaroteThe sawdust under my bed when we arrived at our flat on Lanzarote should have been a clue, as should have been my instinct that told me at night my head was sinking lower than my feet in bed.

In the end, however, it was not until I eventually decided to investigate further than I found out what was wrong. I had suspected my mattress had a problem, or a spring had gone. But it turned out that the piece of chipboard at one end of my bed had broken and now had a hole in it.

Circus Renz Manege

Yesterday I was invited to a performance of Circus Renz Manege in Bad Homburg.  The circus is only there for 3 days and I attended the Saturday afternoon performance with my daughter.

The circus had taken over the Festplatz for the week (known to many as the fun fair at Laternenfest), which made parking a little difficult, but we were early enough to find something in the streets on the Kirdorf side.

Inside the foyer there was popcorn and drinks on sale, before we entered the tunnel leading into the big top.

This was split into three seating categories, with the Sperrsitz the cheapest and located either side of the performers’ entrance, the 2. Loge the “normal” ring of seating and a few rows called the 1. Loge directly in front of the circus ring (called the Manege in German). [Read more…]

Children in Germany can now be seen AND heard

Shhhhh! - ©iStockphoto.com/rtiomUntil recently, children in Germany were restricted in how loud they could be when playing, and being too loud could land someone in court.

For a private household, there is the ever-present problem of the local Rühezeiten, but if a group of children were playing together, then their level of noise could put them on a par with a factory building.

So building a playground or even a Kindergarten near a housing estate was a risky business, because there was always the chance that someone might start proceedings just because the children were too loud.

Of course, you could wonder who would be so annoyed by the sound of children playing, that they feel the need to go to court.
