Keeping quiet during the “ortsübliche Ruhezeiten”

If you rent a flat in Germany, or even if you own property, you are usually bound by something called the “ortsübliche Ruhezeiten”.

Ruhezeit is quite simple to translate – quiet time.  It is the time when you have to be quiet, i.e. not make a noise that could be heard outside of the flat.

That’s the easy part.

ortsüblich is one of those words that tries to define something, but fails.  It literally means “the usual times for where you live”.

So the ortsübliche Ruhezeiten are the usual times to keep quiet in the place that you live in. [Read more…]

Santory Eis

Für viele ist es wahrscheinlich ein Eis wie jedes andere.

Für mich gehört es zum Urlaub in Lanzarote dazu, weil ich – soweit ich weiß – es sonst nirgendwo bekommen kann.

Es heißt  “Santory” und auf den ersten Blick könnte man meinen es ist ein Softeis aus der Maschine. Aber ist es nicht. Es kommt aus der Gefriertruhe und ist sogar in einer Waffel.

Aber die Waffel ist in einem Plastikbecher und auch die Schokoladensoße ist gefroren. Beim Öffnen zumindest.

Ich weiß nicht viel über “Santory”, außer dass es ein Produkt der kanarischen Inseln ist und dass es von der Firma “Kalise” hergestellt wird.

Es ist ein wenig anders, als das Eis das ich gewohnt bin und ich freue mich darauf, jedes Mal wenn ich auf Lanzarote zu Besuch bin.

Oberursel’s swimming pool problem

Oberursel’s swimming pool is one of the most discussed topics in the town, after the Hessentag.

For many years, one of its problems had been that the pool was either open as an indoor pool (Hallenbad) or an outdoor one (Freibad), but as far as I know not as both at the same time.  This meant that if there was a bad summer, the ticket receipts could be severely affected.

But it was with the closure of the indoor pool in September 2008 that the real problems started.  After the collapse of the roof of a public ice rink in southern Germany, many towns commissioned studies of their public buildings to ensure that they did not suffer the same fate during the winter months, which appeared to be receiving more snow from year to year.

Oberursel’s roof was deemed too unsafe for public swimming, and the indoor pool has not been open since. [Read more…]
