Accessing the internet – Hotspots

Although there are internet cafés in Germany, they are not very common. So if you want to access the internet whilst you’re here, using a hotspot is a good choice – but not necessarily the cheapest.

A lot of hotels offer wireless hotspots (WLAN) to their guests these days, and even some restaurants offer it free of charge whilst you are eating in them!

Otherwiese – check out the T-Com Hotspot Finder where you can put in your destination and find the nearest hotspots.

I’ve successfully tested some in and around Frankfurt with my laptop and my palm. Obviously these need to be wireless enabled. If your laptop does not have wireless, then you may be able to use a wireless card in it like the one pictured below:

Hotel Katharinenhof (Bad Homburg)

This hotel is outside of Bad Homburg in a part of the town called “Ober-Erlenbach”. It is reachable by bus (Nos. 2, 12 & 22), and is situated in the old-part of Ober-Erlenbach.

Particularly for visitors on business, this can be a welcome place to stay away from the centre. There are still sufficient facilities (restaurants, supermarket, …) within walking distance.

Potatoes anyone?

This week’s restaurant recommendation is the Kartoffelküche in Bad Homburg. If you want to see what’s possible with the humble potato – this is the place to go.

There are potatoes in all sorts of dishes: eg. casseroles and gratins, combined with different meats and vegetables.

Also interesting are the vintage signs on the walls – advertisements for well known foodstuffs, but from several decades ago.

As it is so popular I do suggest that you book a table if you’re going there – any night of the week!
