The Schillerturm in Oberursel was built in 1905 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the death of Friedrich Schiller. Until the 1960s a metal tower stood on top of the stone base, allowing visitors a view above the treetops.

A new attraction outside Binz on Rügen is hoping to attract visitors and bring them closer to nature during their stay on the island. Outside the town a new nature trail has been built, which features not just an elevated section through the trees but also two towers. The higher of the two goes up as far as 82m above sea level, is shaped like an eagle’s nest and offers spectacular views across the island.

The first tower, however, starts at ground level and takes you up into the trees. From there, an elevated section takes you through the woods to the second tower. On the way there are a number of things to do, all of them optional. There are some alternative routes that contain see-saw type arrangements or wobbly boards to make the walk for children more interesting. They call it the “Wahrzeichen der Stadt” – the town’s landmark, and photos of it can usually be found on many of the postcards from Bergen auf Rügen. And yet, the Ernst-Moritz-Arndt Tower is not really near to the centre of the town and, in tower terms, is not really that tall. So what is all the fuss about?
To understand the tower, it is an advantage to know who exactly Ernst Moritz Arndt was and why it was built in the first place.
He was a poet and a thinker, born in 1769 on Rügen at a time when the island belonged to Sweden. His works reflect the beauty that he saw in the island, but he known in particular for criticising Napoleon’s occupation of Germany and fleeing into exile as a result. [Read more…]
