The Mühlenwanderweg – walking where the mills used to be

It was only recently that I discovered the Mühlenwanderweg in Oberursel.  It happened quite by chance, as I wanted to walk from the International Scout Camp during the Hessentag into town, and my route took me that way.  Otherwise, I may still not have known it was there.

So when I found out that the local history society (Verein für Geschichte und Heimatkunde) was offering a guided walk along part of the path, I decided to go along and find out more.

St. Mildred’s Church

Die St. Mildred’s Church  ist eine etwas kleinere Kirche in Canterbury, Kent. Sie steht in der Nähe des Schlosses in der Church Lane. Zwar liegt sie  etwas abseits der Haupteinkaufsstraße, aber man kann sie gut zu Fuß erreichen.

Die Kirche sieht von außen eher unscheinbar aus, innen jedoch ist sie sehr schön. Sie ist eine der ältesten Kirchen in Canterbury und ein Teil existierte wahrscheinlich schon vor dem Jahre 1300. Über viele Jahre hinweg wurde an die Kirche angebaut und innen weiter ausgestattet, während in manch anderen Jahren einiges zerstört und später wieder aufgebaut wurde.

Bei den Einwohnern von Canterbury ist St. Mildred’s sehr beliebt, weil sie klein ist und gut zu erreichen. Sie ist ein Ort der Ruhe und Einkehr und viele Menschen kommen in diese Kirche um für ein paar Minuten Gott nah zu sein.

Der Eintritt ist kostenlos und Informationen, wann welche  Gottesdienste stattfinden, bekommt man auf der Homepage.  Sonntags um 11 Uhr findet der reguläre Gottesdienst statt.

Besuchen Sie die Kirche wenn sie in Canterbury sind, es lohnt sich auf jeden Fall!

Bergen auf Rügen

When I arrived on Rügen, one of the first places that I went to was the island’s capital, Bergen.

Bergen auf Rügen somehow felt familiar, even though I had never been there before.  It reminded me of other places that I had visited on the North Sea coast, even though it is actually located some way inland.  I think this was a mixture of the architecture and the layout of the town, of maybe it is something that many towns along the coast have in common.

The market square and a car park is located at the centre of the town, although – perhaps confusingly – the signs to the free car park called “Zentrum” actually take you in a different direction.  From that car park it is a 10 minute walk to market square along a tree-covered road.

Once there, the most noticeable building is the Benedix House, named after the family that used to live there, it is considered to be the oldest residential house on the island of Rügen and was apparently built in 1538.  It currently houses the tourist information office. [Read more…]
