Two donors – Two hundred donations

173 people made their way to the Red Cross building in the Marxstraße yesterday (Saturday, 11th May, 2013) to donate blood.  For two of them, it was their 100th donation.

Bernd Adler, 65, was the first to arrive.  He started donating blood in his home town Bad Hersfeld, but on moving to Schmitten 30 years ago he started donating in Oberursel.  “I only come for the Rindswurst (beef sausage)” he joked.

Jürgen Popp, 50, on the other hand has moved from Oberursel to Frankfurt, but he still returns on a regular basis to donate blood rather than going somewhere new.  As a professional soldier he has seen for himself how the blood is used in emergency situations in places like Afghanistan.

“It is a great achievement to regularly donate [blood] over so many years” said Jürgen Swoboda of the Red Cross blood donation service.  He present both of them with a certificate and a wristwatch engraved with their names, as well as a badge of honour.  The also each received a hamper from the local branch.

25 Years (and more) serving the Town and the Fire Service

When Holger Himmelhuber passed one of his friends washing a fire engine at the Bleiche, it was an encounter that would go on to change his life.  Not only did he join the “Oberursel-Mitte” fire brigade on that same day in 1976, but 5 years later he played a role in creating the “Jugendfeuerwehr” (youth fire brigade) and shortly afterwards became responsible for maintaining the equipment as well.

Some years later, in 1988, he took on the role of “Wehrführer”, putting in him charge of the town centre’s fire brigade, located in the Marxstraße.  It was at this point that he because an “Ehrenbeamter”, which roughly translates as being a voluntary civil servant.

That was 25 years ago, and to celebrate a number of members of the fire brigade, along with his family, gathered at the town hall for a presentation made by the town’s treasurer Thorsten Schorr. [Read more…]
