And finally… the story of hessentag2011.de

The website www.hessentag2011.de was the official website of the Hessentag last year in Oberursel, and the AllThingsGerman.net blog had a number of links to the information contained on it.

To make sure that we do not link to websites that are not there, all of the links are regularly checked to make sure that they work.  So imagine my surprise when I received an e-mail at the beginning of October to tell me that the links to the Hessentag page were no longer valid! [Read more…]

November: Volunteer pilots completed their training

They are known as “pilots” – Lotsen – because they guide people who want to volunteer towards the organisations that need them, just as a pilot guides a ship.

November: Youth Office (Jugendbüro) celebtrated 10th anniversary

The youth office (Jugendbüro) celebtrated its 10th anniversary this autumn.  Located at Eppsteinerstraße 16-18 and has been run since its inauguration by Achim Hasselbrg.

Amongst other things, the office aims to integrate young people in the day-to-day life in the town, but also offers advice and information to them on a range of matters.

October: Ikarus moved to the Adenauerallee

The sculpture “Ikarus” by Angelina Androvic Gradisnik which had previously been at the Aero Flight building in the Lessingstraße was moved to new location in the Adenauerallee.

The building is due to be demolished, so the sculpture was purchased by a local resident and is on permanent loan to the town.

Next to the sculpture in the photo are the artist with mayor Hans-Georg Brum.

 

September: New signs for the town centre and the Shopping Lady

New signs for Oberursel’s town centre were unveiled in September, to help visitors to the town find their way around better.

The signs show the way to the U-Bahn stations, the car parks and public buildings.  The are colour-coded so that places in the old town (“Altstadt”) are anthracite (dark grey) whereas others are blue.

Another new addition is the “Shopping Lady” (inset in the photo), an icon showing the way to the main shopping area and guiding visitors around it.

September: Fibre Optic Internet for Oberursel

In September 2012 it was announced that Oberursel, along with Bad Homburg, had been selected by Deutsche Telekom to receive internet via fibre optic cables in 2013, meaning connection speeds of up to 200MBit/s for parts of the town.

September: Stadtradeln – cycling for the climate

In June this year Oberursel took part in the “Stadtradeln” competition, where members of the town council and other citizens of the town switch from their cars to bicycles to save carbon dioxide.

18 members of parliament and a further 153 people from the town took part in 17 teams and cycled a total of 27,039 kilometres, saving 3.8 tonnes of the gas.

The photo shows Alderman Christof Fink with the some of those who took part.

The winning team came from the town’s fire brigade (Freiwilligen Feuerwehr Oberursel), who managed 693km per person, followed in 2nd place by City, Bike & Fun and 3rd place by the company “Hydrodata”.

September: A winner at the KSfO Sports Day

After completing a circuit of sporting activities at the KSfO Sports Day in September, Gabi Wietschorke from Bommersheim won first prize in the tombola of a weekend for two people half-board in the 5 star Aqua Dome Hotel in Längenfeld, Tirol, sponsored by Thomas Cook.

She was presented with her prize by Bernd Lienhard and Markus Bialuch from Thomas Cook, and the town’s treasurer, Thorsten Schorr.

2012 in Oberursel

2012 cubes - ©iStockphoto.com/alexslSince “AllThingsGerman Oberursel” was launched at the beginning of July, there have been around 350 articles published on the website.  Some announce forthcoming events, others report on traffic accidents and road closures, and some go into depth on the current political topics in the town.  They have been accompanied by over 300 photos.

Book flea market at the library

Pile of books - ©Can Stock Photo Inc. / NatikaThere will be a book flea market in Oberursel’s library on Saturday, 5th January, 2013 between 10am and 1pm with proceeds going to the library’s supporters’ association.

The library is located at one end of the market square in Oberursel, in the Eppsteinerstraße.

The nearest car parks are “Bleiche” and in the Holzweg. The nearest train station is Altstadt (U3).
