14th Rheingau Wine Festival

The 14th Rheingau Wine Festival in Oberursel is being held between Friday 1st August and Sunday 3rd August 2014 on the Marktplatz.

Many of the vineyards at the festival will be familiar to those who have been before, as they have been coming for a number of years and often have their stands in the same place each year.

Visitors can expect to find selected Riesling and Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir) wines from towns such as Lorch, Hattenheim, Hochheim, Giesenheim, Erbach, Johannisberg and Oestrich-Winkel.

There will also be a variety of food on offer, including Flammkuchen (Tarte Flambee) and (Zwiebelkuchen) Onion cake.

The festival will be officially opened on Friday evening at 6.30pm.

The stands are open on Friday and Saturday from 5pm until 12.30am and on Sunday from 2pm until 11pm. [Read more…]

A new lease of life for the Mühlenfest

The water wheel is turning, people are sitting on benches and at tables on the opposite site of the path.  They are enjoying the cold drinks, whilst next to them Felix, aged 7, is climbing up a mobile climbing wall for at least the sixth time.  At the top he can look down onto the Bleiche car park.

This is the “Mühlenfest” – the annual festival organised by the “Naturfreunde” (“Friends of Nature”) – that was revived in 2013 and took place last Sunday (27th July, 2014).

For their chairman, Uwe Oeckel, it is a good sign to see so many young people there.  The local organisation is trying to offer more activities for children, not just at the festival, to get them more involved. [Read more…]

Diving School broken into

The diving school in the Karl-Hermann-Flach-Straße was broken into during last weekend (26th/27th July, 2014).

Equipment worth €21,000 was stolen from the shop, and police are not yet able to say how the burglars were able to enter the property.

Take a look inside the tower of St.Ursula’s Church

St.Ursula's Church Tower in OberurselThe tower of St.Ursula’s Church in Oberursel will be open to the public on Saturday, 2nd August, 2014 between 3pm and 5pm.

The tower contains a museum, the belfry and there is also access to the roof where you can get a breathtaking view across the town and its neighbours.

Entry costs €1.50 for adults and €1.00 for children.

 

Book flea market at the library

The library is located at one end of the market square in Oberursel, in the Eppsteinerstraße.

The nearest car parks are “Bleiche” and in the Holzweg. The nearest train station is Altstadt (U3).

Take a tour of Oberursel’s old town

The Bleiche in Oberursels old townA tour of the old town (Altstadt) part of Oberursel is being offered on Saturday, 2nd August, 2014 at 2pm.

The tour starts in front of the Vortaunusmuseum at the Marktplatz at 2pm and costs €3 per person.

Donate Blood in Weißkirchen

Blood - ©Can Stock Photo Inc. / iqonceptBlood can be donated at the fire station in Weißkirchen (part of Oberursel) on Wednesday, 30th July, 2014 between 3.45pm and 8pm. The fire station is located at Friedrich-Ludwig-Jahn-Strasse 2a.

To donate you must be healthy and between 18 and 68 years of age. If you have not donated before, then you must not be over 60. You must take some form of identification with you, such as a passport, that contains a photo.

The Maize Maze in Weißkirchen

Last Saturday (19th July, 2014) saw the official opening of the Maize Maze between Weißkirchen and Steinbach for the new summer season.  Fountain Queen Carolyn II. officially declared the maze open with its owner Richard Bickert, before going into the maze herself with her Brunnenmeister Harry.

The maze has a different theme this year, and this year it has taken on the shape of the South American continent – complete with the Falkand Islands.   For adults there are questions to answer about the countries there and the answers are hidden in the maze, such as “how many spears does the Bolivian coat of arms have”  Children have a different set of tasks which involves looking for photos of animals. Town guides thanked for 10 years of tours

10 years ago a group of Oberursel’s residents met in the “Zum Schwanen” pub in the old town to begin their training as town guides.  Knows as the “Stadtführer”, they not only take groups around the town centre, but other parts as well such as the Hohe Mark clinic and Camp King.  They also offer walks along the Mühlenwanderweg and themed tours about the war memorials and jewish life in the town.

To celebrate their 10th anniversary, a group of the guides returned to the spot where it all began where they were met by Mayor Hans-Georg Brum and town treasurer Thorsten Schorr. [Read more…]
