Energy saving advice

Oberursel RathausThe Verbraucherzentrale (consumers’ association) will be offering individual energy saving consultations in the Rathaus in Oberursel on Thursday, 6th September, 2012 between 2pm and 6pm.

Appointments cost €5 for 30 minutes, and €2.50 for each 15 minutes after that. They need to be arranged in advance by calling 06171 502-310.

 

Bingo at the Seniorentreff

Anyone who is interested is invited to come along and try their luck!

3,000 step walk for senior citizens

To take part, be at the Christuskirche in the Oberhöchstädter Straße at 3pm.

A first look at Oberursel’s Ausländerbeirat

The last time that I wrote about the term “Ausländerbeirat” I had just voted in Oberursel to elect a new one in November 2010.  At the time I asked what the point of having one was, especially I did not know any of the candidates and the turnout at the election was only 3%.

For the benefit of readers who are not aware of the Ausländerbeirat (other than a voting slip every 5 years), it is an elected parliamentary body that every town in Hessen has where more than 1000 foreigners live.  And only those foreigners are eligible to stand for election and to vote.

As I understand it they have two purposes.  One is to support the integration of foreigners in the local community, and the other is to look at the decisions being made by other committees and the town parliament in order to comment on whether the non-German communities will be particularly affected by them.

Whether they have any power to block any of those decisions, I have yet to discover. [Read more…]

Vortaunusmuseum 25th Birthday Party

The Vortaunusmuseum at the Marktplatz in OberurselThe Vortaunusmusem is celebrating its 25th Birthday on Saturday, 1st September 2012 between 4pm and 10pm.

The museum, which contains examples of the mills that used to operate in Oberursel as well as some of the Celtic finds from the area, was opened in 1987.  It now contains the Tourist Information Centre and also a special exhibition about the Seifenkistenrennen (soap box races).

At the birthday party there will be things for both children and adults to do, as well as tours of the exhibits and a look behind the scenes of the museum itself.

The museum is located at the top end of the Marktplatz.

 

Take a look inside the tower of St.Ursula’s Church

St.Ursula's Church Tower in OberurselThe tower of St.Ursula’s Church in Oberursel will be open to the public on Saturday, 1st September, 2012 between 3pm and 5pm.

The tower contains a museum, the belfry and there is also access to the roof where you can get a breathtaking view across the town and its neighbours.

Entry costs €1.50 for adults and €1.00 for children.

 

Book flea market at the library

The library is located at one end of the market square in Oberursel, in the Eppsteinerstraße.

The nearest car parks are “Bleiche” and in the Holzweg. The nearest train station is Altstadt (U3).

 

Take a tour of Oberursel’s old town

The Bleiche in Oberursels old townA tour of the old town (Altstadt) part of Oberursel is being offered on Saturday, 1st September, 2012 at 2pm.

The tour starts in front of the Vortaunusmuseum at the Marktplatz at 2pm and costs €3 per person.

Speed checks on the Kanonenstraße

Speed camera - ©Can Stock Photo Inc. / AngelstormThe police in Oberursel (Ordnungspolizei) carried out speed checks on the Kanonenstraße towards the Feldberg in both directions last week.

On Wednesday, 15th August 2012, between 6.20pm and 8.15pm they measured the speed of 872 vehicles travelling towards either Oberursel or the Sandplacken on a stretch of the road where speeds of up to 100km/h are allowed.

23 of those measured were travelling too fast, with one motorcycle travelling at 146km/h. The driver faces a €160 fine, 3 points on their license and a 1 month driving ban.  The same penalty will apply to the driver of the fastest car as well, who was travelling at 153km/h.
