Epinay-Platz on 25th March, 2017

This was the Epinay-Platz in Oberursel on Saturday, 25th March, 2017, when a pro-European rally was held on the 50th anniversary of the square being named after Oberursel’s twin town in France.

Rally for Europe at the Epinay-Platz

It was at Easter 1967, 50 years ago, that the Epinay-Platz in Oberursel officially received its name.  The town twinning between Oberursel and Epinay-sur-Seine in France was only three years old at the time.

This event will be remembered on Saturday, 25th March, 2017 when a rally will be held on the square between 11.30am and 1pm under the title “Kundgebung für Europa”.

Epinay was the first town that Oberursel twinned with, and the twinning itself is still going strong.  But considering recent events and the current discussions taking place on the future of Europe it was been decided not to celebrate with a festival, but with a rally, with speeches, stalls and music. Demonstrating for Peace on the Epinay-Platz

The members of the “peace initiative” probably envisaged their human chain somewhat longer when they sent out the invitations to “Oberursel steht” on the Epinay-Platz.

To commemorate the start of the Second World War 75 years ago on what is now known in Germany as “Antikriegstag” (anti-war day) they wanted to form a chain between the asylum seekers’ accommodation and Rushmoor park.  To manage that they would have needed 1,000 people.

In the end just over 60 people followed the call at short notice and the chain was able to cross the Epinay-Platz and run at least along part of the Kumeliusstraße. [Read more…]

50 Years of Twinning – Bees, U-Bahn and Birthday Cake

Saturday (7th June, 2014) was a day of celebration in Oberursel, with 40 guests visiting from the twin town of Epinay-sur-Seine to mark the 50th anniversary of the town twinning.

The day began in the Adenauerallee next to the “Annika fountain” and the cedar tree with a “honey breakfast” and the inauguration of a butineur urbain  – a civic bee hive.

Manfred Belz from the local bee keepers’ club gave a short talk on the importance of the bees in the environment, and on the different types of honey that they produce at different times of the year.

The project is being supported by the grammar school in Oberursel, and will eventually be moved to their grounds.  Financial assistance is being provided by a charity associated with Frankfurt Airport.

Oberursel’s Mayor Hans-Georg Brum, accompanied by Epinay’s Deputy Mayor Patrice Konieczny, said that the twinning still young and active after 50 years, and that sustainability was a key issue for it.  A similar bee-hive was installed last month in Epinay-sur-Seine, and this is seen as a “airlift” connection between the two towns.
