The playground in Camp King is paradise for children

12 years ago a new playground was built on the border between the residential areas “Im Rosengärtchen” and “Camp King”.  Back then it was a project involving local parents, and today the playground connects the two areas.  On four mornings a week, it is even used by the charity Aktion Kinderparadies e.V. to provide daycare for groups of young children.

Now the playground has been given a makeover by the town’s own BSO workforce, [Read more…]

Photos from the party at the station

Organised by local residents and part of the Orscheler Sommer, the party at the station took place between the 8th and 10th of August, 2014.

Here are some photos taken during Friday evening and Saturday afternoon:

A long evening with the Ausländerbeirat

If the members of the Ausländerbeirat thought they were in for a short meeting when they met on Monday, 23rd September, 2013, then they had to think again.  Lasting almost two hours, the meeting was the longest that I personally had experienced to date.

Part of the reason for this was certainly down to the questions from the public, two of which led to extensive discussions.

One question that did not was about a new playground in the town next to a building where – according to one of the town councillors who happened to be present – a lot of foreigners live.  The opening times for the playground only list work days, but not Sunday.  So is it closed on a Sunday or just open all day?

Not that the Ausländerbeirat could really be expected to give an answer to this, but maybe they could have passed the question on instead of referring the councillor to the social and culture sub-committee of which, ironically, he is himself a member. [Read more…]

Spielplatz am Rosengärtchen to remain a playground

When I first heard about the plans to build a new Kindergarten on the playground “Spielplatz am Rosengärtchen” in the Neuhausstraße, I was horrified.  Not only because I had received incorrect information about the location from the Ausländerbeirat, but because I felt personally affected by it more than by many of the things that I write about on this site.

This is the playground that I take my children to and we even held a birthday party there once.  It has a variety of things for children to do and play on, including a large basket for a swing, a roundabout, two slides, a “bare foot path” (created incidentally by a local Scout group) and a couple of climbing frames.  It also has places for parents to sit down and even a few tables, and in summer the trees provide shade for most of the playground.

All of a sudden this was under threat, with the reason given that the number of new homes built at the northern end of Oberursel would, one day, require further child-care places to be available in the area. [Read more…]

The last sunset over Oberursel’s outdoor swimming pool… for now

Oberursel's outdoor swimming pool as it shut at 7pm on 16th September 2012

These photos were taken during the last hour of the outdoor swimming pool (Freibad) in Oberursel, on Sunday, 16th September, 2012, between 6pm and 7pm.

As the sun set over the trees, the pool slowly emptied, the gate was locked up for the last time and the guests slowly made their way home – some of them with souvenirs from the buildings that are due to be knocked down next week.

The pool is due to re-open for the summer season in 2014.

A new playground is planned on the Dornbachwiesen to replace the one that was lost when the Kita Regenbogenland was extended.

Local children gathered to present Alderman Christof Fink and the planning office their wishes and ideas for the new playground, which will be built along the Eschbachweg between the Heidegraben and Lahnstraße.
