portstrasse: Your Town – Your Space – Your Music

What is “portstrasse”?  For many it may be the name of one of the U3 stops (now called “Altstadt”), or one of the streets leading to the Bleiche in Oberursel.

For others it may be the building on the corner of that street and opposite that station where the Friday Night Jazz session takes place, the children’s cinema, and other events.

But there is a lot more to the “portstrasse” than just that, especially for the town’s teenagers, some of which may not be obvious at first glance.

It’s full title is “portstrasse – the forum for youth and culture”, and is made up of four different offerings.  The café, the “bluebox” cinema, the “musikhalle” concert location and the “kunstbühne” stage.  And they have been doing this for over 30 years, making them one of the oldest organisations of its kind in Germany. 50 Years of Local History

50 years ago – on 28th November 1962 to be precise, a group of friends met in the hall of the primary school “Nord” and formed the “Verein für Geschichte und Heimatkunde Oberursel e.V.”, or in English: the local history society. The first speech was held by Dr. Christoph Müllerleile, himself a member since 1965. He confirmed that the society has the support of the town’s administration, but also the support of its members, making it exemplary in the area.
