Monuments and Soap boxes

Once again this weekend, two major events are taking place in Oberursel.

The annual “Seifenkistenrennen” – soap box racing – will be held on Saturday evening (13th September, 2014) in the Strackgasse.  Training for the children begins at 3pm with racing starting at 4pm and the winners being announced at 7pm.  The adult races will start at 7pm, with the winners being announced around 10pm.

Sunday is the “monument open day” and a number of guided tours will be on offer.

Between 1pm and 2.30pm Angelika Rieber will be at the Jewish Cemetery in the Altkönigstraße (next to the swimming pool car park) to explain the history of the cemetery and the differences between the styles of graves.  Please note that men are asked to cover their head as a sign of respect when visiting the cemetary.

At 3.30pm at tour of “war and anti-war memorials” will start at the Christuskirche in the Oberhöchstadter Straße, with Angelika Rieber and Dietrich Andernacht visiting and explaining the different monuments in the town that have been erected since 1871.  The tour costs €3 per person.

Another successful Waldfest

The last weekend of the summer holidays traditionally sees the “Waldfest” take place in an area of the woods in Oberursel known as the “Schulwald”.

There was even cause for a small celebration this year, as Hochtaunuskreis District Councillor Uwe Kraft (CDU) explained to the guests.  20 years ago, it was realised that there were 45 different types of tree growing within a relatively small space.  The Schulwald came into being out in order to allow the schools in the town access to the area, and even then one of the factors considered was that it should not burden the town’s finances.

To make sure that didn’t happen, a supporters’ charity (“Förderverein”) was set up and their chairman Dieter Rosentreter even travelled up from Bavaria for the event on Saturday.  As he greeted the guests, he emphasised that the day is held for the children who come. [Read more…]

Demonstrating for Peace on the Epinay-Platz

The members of the “peace initiative” probably envisaged their human chain somewhat longer when they sent out the invitations to “Oberursel steht” on the Epinay-Platz.

To commemorate the start of the Second World War 75 years ago on what is now known in Germany as “Antikriegstag” (anti-war day) they wanted to form a chain between the asylum seekers’ accommodation and Rushmoor park.  To manage that they would have needed 1,000 people.

In the end just over 60 people followed the call at short notice and the chain was able to cross the Epinay-Platz and run at least along part of the Kumeliusstraße. [Read more…]
