When the UK leaves the European Union, I’ll be staying in Oberursel

‘On 23rd June voters in the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland decided in favour leaving the European Union, the so-called “Brexit”.’

How often have I read these words in the past half year, or even written them myself?  I wrote them in July for the Oberurseler Woche and again later in the year in a slightly different form to report on a information evening about German citizenship.  I have used similar words on my blog and I have given interviews about the referendum to the Taunus Zeitung and Frankfurter Rundschau.    But having reported and answered questions about the facts, there remains a personal side to the issue.  My story, as a British Citizen living in Oberursel. Oberursel Christmas Market (Weihnachtsmarkt)

The 2016 Christmas Market (Weihnachtsmarkt) in Oberursel starts on Thursday, 24th November and continues until Sunday, 27th November.

The market is open Thursday 4pm-9pm, Friday 2pm-10pm, Saturday 12pm-10pm and Sunday 12pm-9pm, and takes place in front of the town hall (Rathausplatz), along the “Vorstadt” and “Strackgasse”, and on the market square (“Marktplatz”) with over 100 stands in total.  Additionally this year the new car park behind the Stadthalle in the Hospitalstraße will also have stands on it, including a merry-go-round. Information evening about applying for German Citizenship

The Ausländerbeirat in Oberursel is organising an information evening about the subject of applying for German Citizenship, which will be held in the town hall (Rathaus) on Tuesday, 15th November, 2016 at 6pm.

Thomas Krämer, who works for the Regierungspräsidium in Darmstadt – the part of local Government who ultimately decides on whether citizenship will be awarded on not – will be visiting to talk on the subject and answer questions.

A number of British Citizens in the area are already applying for dual citizenship while this option is still available to them, and this will be covered in the course of the evening as well.

Man from Oberursel missing: Karamat Ullah Munib

Police are asking for help to find Karamat Ullah Munib, a 35-year-old man who lives in the Rosengärtchen area at the northern end of Oberursel.  He has been missing since 5.30am on Monday morning since he left a clinic in Frankfurt.

Since then his whereabouts are unknown and the police investigation has so far has not turned up any results.  The reason for his disappearance is also unknown.

Mr. Munib is 1m 70cm tall, slim, with black hair and a moustache.  He is probably wearing a pair of black tracksuit trousers with green stripes, a black jacket and blue trainers.  He requires medication.

Anyone who sees him or has information for the police is asked to call detectives in Bad Homburg on 06172 1200. [Read more…]

Zeppelinstraße to become a cycle route

The Zeppelinstraße in Oberursel about to turned into a cycle route.  Over the course of the autumn half term the road will be converted making cyclists the main users, although cars will still be allowed.

Signs at the ends of the road showing a white bicycle on a blue circle background with the word “Fahrradstraße” will be accompanied by additional signs showing “KFZ-Verkehr frei”, meaning the cars can travel up to 30km/h but that the cyclists have priority.  Cyclists will also be allowed to use the road in groups without having to ride in single file. Herbsttreiben – a Market of Markets

Vegetables - ©Can Stock Photo Inc. / OG_visionThe annual Herbsttreiben weekend in Oberursel is being held between the 16th and 18th of September, 2016.

On these days, a handicraft market will take place on the Epinayplatz and in the Kumeliusstraße, cider will be sold on the Marktplatz at the “Ebbelwoi-Vertestigung”, whilst stalls selling French wares will be on the car park behind the Stadthalle.

Sunday, 21st September is “verkaufsoffen” and many of the shops in the town centre will be open during the afternoon, and also on Sunday a Vietnamese festival will take place in the Adenauerallee between 12pm and 6pm.

8th Oberursel Feyerey

The middle ages will be coming to Oberursel at the weekend when the 8th annual “Feyerey” takes place on the fields next to the “Bachpfädchen”.

Over 66 market stands will offering food and drink, hand-made goods, and items such as soap and honey.

There will be games for children, fire shows, music and dancing, and even shows with birds of prey.  Click here for the times of the shows.

The event takes place on the fields between the Mühlenwanderweg and the Marxstraße.  To get there, either park on the field between the Marxstraße and the Hohemarkstraße or take the U-Bahn to “Lahnstraße”. [Read more…]

16th Rheingau Wine Festival

The 16th Rheingau Wine Festival in Oberursel is being held between Friday 5th August and Sunday 7th August 2015 on the Marktplatz.

Many of the vineyards at the festival will be familiar to those who have been before, as they have been coming for a number of years and often have their stands in the same place each year.

Visitors can expect to find selected Riesling and Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir) wines from towns such as Lorch, Hattenheim, Hochheim, Giesenheim, Erbach, Johannisberg and Oestrich-Winkel.

There will also be a variety of food on offer, including Flammkuchen (Tarte Flambee) and (Zwiebelkuchen) Onion cake.

The festival will be officially opened on Friday evening at 6.30pm. [Read more…]

This weekend is Brunnenfest

This weekend sees one of the largest festivals in Oberursel take place – the fountain festival or Brunnenfest.

The event kicks off on Friday evening at 5pm with  an open-air church service at the Marktplatz followed by the official opening with Fountain Queen Nadine I.

Other highlights include the inauguration of the Urselbach Fountain on Saturday morning at Haus am Urselbach at 11am and the 5, 10 and 21.1km festival runs on Sunday morning at 10am.

For children up to the age of 10 the Kindermeile will be in the Obere Hainstraße on Saturday between 3pm and 6pm and the annual duck race on the Urselbach will be held on Sunday at 3pm with tickets being sold on Saturday in the Obere Hainstraße.

Saturday evening there will also be a talent show for the town’s youth to show what they can do from 5pm until 7pm.  The show is aptly named “Kickfactor: … and what can you do?”

The fun fair is in its usual place on the Bleiche car park as is the craft market in front of the town hall, with the closing fireworks taking place at 10.30pm on Monday evening. [Read more…]

Jazz meets mills – Jazz meets Mühle

“Jazz meets Mühle” is being held for the fifth time this year, and is again being held on Whitmonday, 16th May 2016, and involves as always the mills along the Mühlenwanderweg.

At five places along the route there will be jazz bands playing, with refreshments available and a chance to see the historical buildings from a new perspective.

Although the event itself will be taking place between 11am and 5.30pm, the bands are playing at different times along the route, allowing visitors to experience each one in turn. [Read more…]
