André’s Show was “elephantastic”

“Come in.  The standing room at the back is reserved, but otherwise everything else is still free” – with these words and a glint in his eye André Gatzke welcomed the guests on Saturday, 23rd April, 2016 to the Georg-Hieronymi-Saal in Oberursel’s town hall.  The book show Libra had invited them to two presentations of “Andrés Spiele-Show”, or put another way, to an active reading of his book.  Around 20 children came to each of the shows with their parents, and even the new Fountain Queen Nadine I. stopped by and took one of the “reserved” places.

André Gatzke is better known to many families simply as André, one of the presenters of “Die Sendung mit dem Elefanten” (“The programme with the Elephant”) on the KiKA channel, as a reporter on the “Sendung mit der Maus” (“The programme with the Mouse”) or from the programme “2 durch Deutschland” (“2 through Germany”).  Less well known is that he is also an author, writing for “Die Sendung mit dem Elefanten” and now his own book of games. Nadine I. crowned Fountain Queen

Saturday, 9th April, 2016 saw the end Christina II.’s reign as Oberursel’s Fountain Queen (Brunnenkönigin).

The evening started with live music from the group “Natürlich 3”, before the guests were welcomed by Hessische Rundfunk presenter Tim Frühling.  In an unprecedented move he welcomed the future queen, Nadine I., who was sitting in the audience.  This is the first year that the name has been revealed publicly in advance.

And it was Nadine’s taste in music that influenced the next act.  Singer Anjuschka Uher sang the winning title from the 2012 Eurovision Song Contest: “Euphoria”.  Later it was the turn of Stierstadt’s firebrigade band to play one last time for Christina before her farewell speech. [Read more…]

The of end Christina II.’s year as Fountain Queen

With just a few days of her reign left, Fountain Queen Christina II. and her Brunnenmeister Jürgen visited the town hall in Oberursel, where they were thanked for their work representing the town by Mayor Hans-Georg Brum and Town Treasurer Thorsten Schorr.

“It was a lovely time” commented Hans-Georg Brum, but continued that everything had to come to an end.  He was keen to highlight the difference between Christina and Jürgen, that they where completely opposite in their approach to things, but this mixture had fitted well together. [Read more…]

Farewell to the U2

The “U2” type of trains have been running on the lines through Frankfurt since the U-Bahn service started on 4th October, 1968, and have been a regular sight in Oberursel since 1978.  Recently they have been replaced by newer models – the “U5” is currently in use on the U3 line – and last weekend the day arrived for the last ones to be taken out of service.

For one day only, six of the remaining U2 trains, including three of the original sets, travelled back and forth between Oberursel-Bahnhof and Römerstadt, a route that was not even possible until 2010.  Along the route, enthusiasts gathered to use the last opportunity to take photos their last journeys.

Those original three train sets, numbered 303, 304, and 305, have been restored and repainted in their original livery.  They will be joining a collection of historic trains in Frankfurt that are maintained for private hire and special events. [Read more…]

Are refugees a topic for the Ausländerbeirat or not?

The first meeting of Oberursel’s Ausländerbeirat after their inaugural meeting started off less spectacularly than the previous one had.  Held on Monday, 8th February, 2016, it was a 18:03 that Dr. Franz Zenker (ILO) asked “shall we start?”, with only 5 of the 9 members present.  “You’re the chairman” came the reply from Natalia Bind (AZO), who only a month before had appeared to be more eager to get things going.

At the time, there were several hundred refugees still camped out in one of the school halls, so it was a topic likely to be discussed.  Indeed, it was even on the Agenda.  Twice.  Four weeks previously the mayor, Hans-Georg Brum, had made it a key topic for the committee.

So when a question was posed about why there had been no mention in that previous meeting of a local building being set up to take 200 asylum seekers, less than 24 hours before the fire brigade carried the beds in, the reply was that the town itself was only informed by the local government (Kreis) at a very late stage.  Thomas Eifert, the committee’s contact in the town hall, commented that “the communication is really bad”. Water supply renewal means diversions and changes to bus route

The water mains at the northern end of Oberursel is due to be overhauled in the coming weeks, resulting in diversions and a change to one of the bus routes.

Starting on Tuesday, 29th March, 2016 traffic travelling out of the town along the Hohemarkstraße will be diverted along the residential road “Im Rosengärtchen” where the right-of-way will be changed at places.  Traffic entering the town will remain on the Hohemarkstraße.  Additional roadworks will be in the road “An der Waldlust” where it crosses the Altkönigstraße.

The bus route 42 travelling from the cemetery towards “Weißkirchen-Ost” will use Hohemarkstraße instead of “Im Rosengärtchen”, with a replacement bus stop opposite the U-Bahn stop “Rosengärtchen”.  The route in the other direction is not affected.

The work is expected to be completed by Friday, 22nd April, 2016.

It’s carnival time!

The Rathaussturm when the carnival prince takes over the town hall took place on Saturday morning.  But as the town does not have a carnival prince this year, it was up to the KinderPrinzenPaar (Children’s prince and princess) Leonard I. and Esther I. to lead the proceedings: [Read more…]

From the Ausländerbeirat: the old chairman stays, the new refugees are coming

The inaugural meeting of the new Ausländerbeirat last Friday was no normal meeting, especially with the number of guests who were present.  Many of the town’s councillors and members of the administration had come along to observe the meeting, so that almost all of the political parties from the council were represented.  Even the press seats where unusually well occupied.

As previously reported, the election at the end of last November gave voters a choice of two lists of candidates.  The “Internationale Liste Oberursel” (ILO) led by Dr. Franz Zenker won 5 seats, whilst “Alle Zusammen Oberursel” (AZO) led by Natalia Bind won 4.  Both had said after the election that they would be standing for election as the new chairperson.

As it turned 6pm it did not so good for Dr. Zenker’s majority, as two of his members were still missing, and it was impossible to miss Natalia Bind grinning like a cheshire cat on the other side of the table.  “It’s 6 O’Clock” she said cheerfully.  “We can start, we have a quorum”, she continued.  Dr. Zenker wanted to wait, but gave in in the end and opened the meeting.  He passed over the chair temporarily to Chantal le Nestour (ILO), who as longest-serving member of the committee was to run the meeting until the vote had taken place.
