Only 3% went to vote

Sunday, 29th November, 2015 saw the chance for the foreign residents in Oberursel to vote: for a new Ausländerbeirat. The committee, which is supposed to represent the interests of the foreigners in the town. Committee members not only have the right to speak at town council sub-committee meetings, for the past year they have also been able to table motions directly to the council itself.

At the last election five years ago the turnout had only been 3.43%, so one of the targets for this election had been to get more voters to the ballot box. In terms of voters they managed it, but only just: 188 instead of 171 went to the town hall to cast their vote. But due to the increased number of foreigners in the town, the turnout as a percentage sank to a record low of 3.08%. [Read more…]

Ausländerbeirat – Polling Day

Sunday, 29th November, 2015 is the day that elections for the Ausländerbeirat take place in Oberursel.

Foreign residents of the town that have lived here for at least three months are eligible to vote and should have recieved their polling cards several weeks ago.

The only polling station for the entire town and its suburbs is in the Georg-Hieronymi-Saal, which is located between the town hall and the police station, with voting possible between 8am and 6pm.

It is not necessary to take the polling card along to vote, although it is better to do so. An ID card or passport is, however, necessary.

In cases of sudden illness, a postal vote is possible up to 3pm, which must, however, be collected by someone in person who has a power of attorney.

Oberursel Christmas Market (Weihnachtsmarkt)

The 2015 Christmas Market (Weihnachtsmarkt) in Oberursel starts on Thursday, 26th November and continues until Sunday, 29th November.

The market is open Thursday 4pm-9pm, Friday 2pm-10pm, Saturday 12pm-10pm and Sunday 12pm-9pm, and takes place in front of the town hall (Rathausplatz), along the “Vorstadt” and “Strackgasse”, and on the market square (“Marktplatz”) with over 100 stands in total. [Read more…]

Green sauce and lots of herbs

Last Sunday (13th September, 2015) was a day of Green sauce and herbs at the maize maze in Weißkirchen.

Despite the bad weather, a good number of guests had come to the barn to enjoy a portion of green sauce with potatoes and eggs, whilst their children and grandchildren were playing in the maize pool or listening to the story of the Wolf and the Seven Kids be told by storyteller Angela Behrs. Where Hanomags met Deutz and Fendt

Classical tractor fans had a chance to see a selection of makes and models at the Bickert family’s maize maze (Maislabyrinth) in Weißkirchen last Sunday.

Not only were there ten “normal” tractors from the area, the oldest of which being a Hanomag type R35 without hydraulics built in 1953 and followed by the model “Robust” of the same make and built in 1962. [Read more…]

A weekend of fun for everyone at the station

This weekend (7th-9th August, 2015) sees an unusual and exciting event take place at Oberursel’s station. As part of the Orscheler Sommer events, local residents, clubs and companies have got together to organise a weekend to “play and get to know each other”.

Already, three lorry loads of sand have been delivered to make a temporary sand pit for children to play in.

The fun starts on Friday with sand castle building from 10am. In the afternoon from 3pm onwards there will be boule, coffee and cakes, and music. The Eastend Jazzband start at 3pm, followed by Stormin’ Norman at 4.30pm. [Read more…]

7th Oberursel Feyerey

The middle ages will be coming to Oberursel at the weekend when the 7th annual “Feyerey” takes place on the fields next to the “Bachpfädchen”.

Over 65 market stands will offering food and drink, hand-made goods, and items such as soap and honey.

There will be games for children, fire shows, music and dancing, and even shows with birds of prey. Click here for the times of the shows.

The event takes place on the fields between the Mühlenwanderweg and the Marxstraße. To get there, either park on the field between the Marxstraße and the Hohemarkstraße or take the U-Bahn to “Lahnstraße”. [Read more…]

15th Rheingau Wine Festival

The 15th Rheingau Wine Festival in Oberursel is being held between Friday 31st July and Sunday 2nd August 2015 on the Marktplatz.

Many of the vineyards at the festival will be familiar to those who have been before, as they have been coming for a number of years and often have their stands in the same place each year.

Visitors can expect to find selected Riesling and Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir) wines from towns such as Lorch, Hattenheim, Hochheim, Giesenheim, Erbach, Johannisberg and Oestrich-Winkel.

There will also be a variety of food on offer, including Flammkuchen (Tarte Flambee) and (Zwiebelkuchen) Onion cake.

The festival will be officially opened on Friday evening at 6.30pm. [Read more…]

Mickey Mouse and Friends in Weißkirchen

Last Saturday (18th July, 2015) saw the start of a new season of the Maize Maze in Weißkirchen. For the 13th time the Bickert family have created a labyrinth in their maize field where visitors not only have to find the right path, but also solve clues to put together a word that allows them to take part in the prize draw at the end of the summer. This year the maze has taken on the silhouettes of Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck.

Fountain Queen Christina II. attended the official opening with her Brunnenmeister Jürgen and presented Richard Bickert with her Bembel, before opening the maze by cutting down the last maize plants in the entrance. [Read more…]

Indoor pool to close for 5 weeks – outdoor pool will remain open

The Stadtwerke Oberursel have informed us that the indoor swimming pool at the TaunaBad will be closed from Monday, 27th July, 2015 for around five weeks. This is to allow for the annual maintenance to take place and to remedy some of the defects left from when the pool was built. This cannot be done whilst the pool is in use.

The Foyer and changing room area will be closed for around one week to allow them to be deep cleaned. Visitors to the outdoor pool can either use the ticket machines next to the building or the side entrance at the end of the car park in the Clara-Schumann-Straße.
