With just a few days of her reign left, Fountain Queen Christina II. and her Brunnenmeister Jürgen visited the town hall in Oberursel, where they were thanked for their work representing the town by Mayor Hans-Georg Brum and Town Treasurer Thorsten Schorr.

“It was a lovely time” commented Hans-Georg Brum, but continued that everything had to come to an end.  He was keen to highlight the difference between Christina and Jürgen, that they where completely opposite in their approach to things, but this mixture had fitted well together. [Read more…]

Leonard I. and Esther I. at the town hall

Having successfully taken over the town hall last Saturday, the children’s prince and princess, Leonard I. and Esther I., moved into the Mayor’s office on Wednesday where they intend to run things until Ash Wednesday.

From the Ausländerbeirat: the old chairman stays, the new refugees are coming

The inaugural meeting of the new Ausländerbeirat last Friday was no normal meeting, especially with the number of guests who were present.  Many of the town’s councillors and members of the administration had come along to observe the meeting, so that almost all of the political parties from the council were represented.  Even the press seats where unusually well occupied.

As previously reported, the election at the end of last November gave voters a choice of two lists of candidates.  The “Internationale Liste Oberursel” (ILO) led by Dr. Franz Zenker won 5 seats, whilst “Alle Zusammen Oberursel” (AZO) led by Natalia Bind won 4.  Both had said after the election that they would be standing for election as the new chairperson.

As it turned 6pm it did not so good for Dr. Zenker’s majority, as two of his members were still missing, and it was impossible to miss Natalia Bind grinning like a cheshire cat on the other side of the table.  “It’s 6 O’Clock” she said cheerfully.  “We can start, we have a quorum”, she continued.  Dr. Zenker wanted to wait, but gave in in the end and opened the meeting.  He passed over the chair temporarily to Chantal le Nestour (ILO), who as longest-serving member of the committee was to run the meeting until the vote had taken place. Carollers at the town hall

Carol singers in German do not go from house to house before Christmas eve, they do it afterwards instead – specifically between 27th December and 6th January.

During this time, the so-called “Sternsinger”, organised by the local church and who are sometimes translated as “star boys”, go from house to house to collect for a particular good cause using the year’s motto and dressed as the Three Kings.

This year the motto is “Segen bringen – Segen sein!  Respekt für dich, für mich, für andere – in Bolivien und weltweit!” (bring a blessing – be a blessing!  Respect for you, for me, for others – in Bolivia and worldwide) and the money raised will go to help children worldwide, in particular in the Bolivia.  With the whole country taking part, it is not unusual to raise over €40 million.

Before they leave they write 20*C+M+B+16 on the door frame, the letters standing for “Christus mansionem benedicat”, or “God protect this house”. [Read more…]

Wine Festival opened

The 15th Rheingau Wine Festival was opened this evening (Friday, 31st July, 2015) by Mayor Hans-Georg Brum.

We asked, they answered. Now we have to vote.

With less than a week to go until voters decide on who they want to be the Mayor in Oberursel, it’s time to start making up my mind who I want to vote for.

Let’s start by looking at those questions that we asked last week.

Five of the questions dealt with things that foreigners in Oberursel affect directly.

The idea of the welcome meeting is something that both candidates would consider doing, and both like the idea of providing more information to new residents.  I see little difference here.  It’s different with the other four. [Read more…]

EU nationals ask the candidates: 7. Communication

Question: Many of the questions have been about communication.  How can the foreigners here be better informed?  I would claim, that many foreigners do not read a newspaper, in particular because it is not in their native language.

One example for this is the call for candidates for the Ausländerbeirat election.  This went out as a classic press release to the newspapers, but there were no information about it in their display cabinet outside the town hall. [Read more…]

Question: The “integration report” was released in Frankfurt this week.  Could you envisage such a report in Oberursel?  Would you actively support the introduction of such a report after the election?

EU nationals ask the candidates: 5. The school grounds in the Marxstraße

Frage: What plans do you have for the area that used to be occupied by temporary classrooms in the Marxstraße?

Although the question was referring to the area between the Red Cross building and Willy-Seck-Straße, the candidates also talked about the future of the area in Im Portugall that will be vacated by the Hans-Thoma-Schule.

Question: why is there not a common foreign language concept for the town.  The town hall is set to have signs in English and French, the Taunabad only has signs in English and in the case of the bio-waste rubbish bins the town’s own subsidiary, BSO, issued information leaflets in English, Turkish and Polish.
