The disused swimming pool in Oberursel - June 2011A “Bürgerversammlung” – a meeting of the local people – is being held in the Stadthalle on Wednesday, 5th September 2012 at 7.30pm.

The meeting is to inform anyone interested about the current state of the planning for the new swimming pool, due to be built next year in Oberursel.

Anyone can attend and put forward their point of view.  Minutes of the meeting are usually published later on the town’s website.

25 Years of making Local History accessible

“History is not as boring as some people think… or as some teachers make it” – this is how the chairman of Oberursel’s town parliament Dr. Christoph Müllerleile commented on the 25th anniversary of the Vortaunusmuseum on Saturday afternoon.

The museum, which was first opened in June 1987, had invited local dignitaries and friends of the museum to celebrate the anniversary in the Seifenkisten (soap box) area, with several making congratulatory speeches.

Renate Messer, who runs the museum, opened the proceedings before handing over to Landrat (District Administrator) Ulrich Krebs.  He highlighted the unique local history that the area offers, such as the Oppidum Heidetränk celtic settlement and the Bommersheimer Burg – a castle that sadly no longer exists.

Oberursel’s Mayor Hans-Georg Brum highlighted the interest in such local museums, and in the feeling of “Heimat” in particular, in a World where everything seems to be closer together and long-established cultures and traditions begin to merge with each other. [Read more…]

The Big Regionalpark Weekend

Regionalpark Parcours auf der RundrouteIt’s going to be a big weekend this coming weekend in the so-called “Regionalpark RheinMain”, with events taken place between the Mainspitze where the Main flows into the Rhein and Hanau, and with Oberursel playing a key role.

Linking up all the places along the route is the “Regionalpark Rundroute” which was opened almost exactly a year ago, whilst the idea of the “Regionalpark” has been around a lot longer, and has been supported since 1997 by the Fraport AG – the company that runs Frankfurt’s airport.

The park itself is a network of paths for walking or cycling that enable access to much of the region’s countryside, with lots of things to see and do in the area outside of the larger towns.

Here is a selection of the events taking place around Oberursel:

  • Horse-drawn carriages will be offering rides between the agricultural display at the U-Bahn station “Weißkirchen-Ost” (U3) and the Maize Maze (€1.50 per trip, 11am-7pm), from where it is also possible to take a ride to the Krebsmühle. [Read more…]
