A double-unit U3 train crossing the road in Bommersheim
I’m not the only person in Oberursel who has noticed something missing recently when travelling by train (U-Bahn) to Frankfurt.
A whole train unit.
Regular readers to the original blog may remember that the stations in Oberursel were upgraded before the Hessentag to take longer trains, making the platforms 75 metres long instead of 50 metres, or in train terms three units coupled together on normal workdays instead of two, each unit being made up of two carriages.
For the past two weeks however, the trains having been running with just two units on these days as well, not just at the weekend, so I asked the local train company why this was.
My suspicions were confirmed: it is all to do with the school holidays.
I received a more detailed response from the town hall in Oberursel. [Read more…]

The U-Bahn to Hohemark sets off just as the driver of the miniature steam train climbs onboard to leave the station during the Bahnhofsfest on Saturday, 26th May, 2012.

This burial mound is located at the start of the Celtic trail, opposite the terminus of the U-Bahn line “U3” from Frankfurt. The “telescope into the past” seen in front of it allows the visitor to see what the inside of the mound would look like.
With so many roads in Oberursel being closed off for the Altstadt-Duathlon and the cycle race “Rund um den Finanzplatz Eschborn-Frankfurt”, there are also a number of changes to bus and train services through the town.
U-Bahn U3
Between 8.30am and 2pm the U3 trains will be terminating at Oberursel-Bahnhof and returning from there back to Frankfurt.
Buses
Bus line 41 will not be running until 17.49 from Oberstedten to Weißkirchen and 17.32 in the opposite direction.
Bus line 42 will not be running until 17.44 from the cemetary to Weißkirchen and 17.29 in the opposite direction.
Local train company VGF have announced that the U3 line that runs through Oberursel will be replaced by buses starting tomorrow, Monday 23rd April, 2012 until Thursday 26th April between Oberursel’s main station (Oberursel Bahnhof) and the end of the line at the Hohemark after 10pm at night.
This is to allow the railway sleepers along the line to be replaced.
The last train from the Südbahnhof to travel to Hohemark will leave at 20:45. The last train from Hohemark will leave at 21:42.
The buses will stop at or near the stations along the length of the line, and will leave Hohemark 5 minutes before the scheduled time of the train in order to connect with the trains at Oberursel Bahnhof.
Local train operators VGF have announced that members of the union ver.di are planning to go on strike on Tuesday, 20th March, 2012.
This will probably affect the U-Bahn and tram networks as well as some bus routes.
Although they are not sure if some trains will be running, they have said that even if that is the case these will probably be very full and have asked travellers to make alternative arrangements.
In Oberursel, for example, the U3 will probably be out of service for the whole day, but the S-Bahn (S5) will still be running.

This photo shows why the U3 line in Oberursel had to be partially closed last week. The factory buildings at the “Kupferhammer” were being demolished and part of the system that carries the overhead lines was fixed to one of the walls.

The factory, which even had its own siding from the days when goods were transported on the line (tram line 24), was known as the “Lumpensortieranstalt Berger” and later as the “Jandorf-Fabrik”.
The U3 will not be running between Lahnstraße and Hohemark tomorrow, Saturday 25th February 2012, from 6am until around 4pm.
During this time replacement buses will be running.
The bus stop is in Lahnstraße itself, and not in the Hohemarkstraße.
