New sculpture unveiled at Chopin-Platz

In September a new sculpture was unveiled at the Chopin-Platz, created by Russian artist Nikolai Karlychanow.  The sculpture shows the pianist’s hands and has been made out of a block of marble.

The project was financed be donations, of which €7,000 came from the Taunus Sparkasse and a further €9,000 from private individuals.

Richtfest – topping out the new swimming pool

Work stopped on the new swimming pool for a few hours last Wednesday afternoon (21st August, 2013) when the “Richtfest” – the topping-out ceremony – took place in the shell of the building.

Those present included  representatives from the town’s political parties, even those who had opposed the way the building is being financed, as well as the architect Dipl.-Ing. Detlef Sacker, the head of the company that will run the pool, Jürgen Funke, and Dr. Werner Freitag, president of the swimmers’ association in Hessen.  Hans Leimeister represented the local district council.

Mayor Hans-Georg Brum commented that it the building was not only the largest project that the town had ever undertaken, but it was also the one that had been discussed the most. [Read more…]

Signing away a sports field

One of the remaining hurdles in selling the sports field known as the “Altkönigsportplatz” was removed last week when the sports club that had originally set it up signed a contract with the town to relinquish their right to use it in exchange for other benefits.

The TSGO (Turn- und Sportgemeinde 1861 e.V. Oberursel) had been using the field since 23rd July, 1933, when it was official opened by the then so-called “Jahngemeinschaft”.  They had purchased the land in 1927, although it was not as large as the field is now.

In 1953 the sports field was expanded and a deal was struck with the town by which the TSGO land became the town’s property in return usage rights.

Now 19,582m² of that land is about to be sold off to fund the new swimming pool  [Read more…]

Ground-breaking ceremony held for the new Porsche centre

Porsche is coming to Oberursel!  That was the message last week Thursday (4th July, 2013) when the chairman of Porsche in Germany, Klaus Zellmer came to the down for the ground-breaking ceremony in the Willy-Brandt-Straße where the new Porsche centre is being built.

The centre will be known as “Porschezentrum Bad Homburg/Oberursel” and will create 25 new jobs in sales and service on 6,800 square metres of land.  It will be run by Otto Glöckler Sportwagen GmbH who also run the Porsche centre in Frankfurt and who are investing €5.5 million in the new centre.

Oliver Glöckler explained that they had looked at several sites in the Taunus area, but had chosen Oberursel because of the good infrastructure and connection to the A661 motorway. [Read more…]

The second Bahnhofsfest – and the less than grand opening

This time last year Oberursel was celebrating the grand re-opening of the station building after the restoration work had been completed.

So when I heard that the Bahnhofsfest (“station festival”) was being held again this year – albeit at short notice – I was looking forward to it.  All of a sudden, everywhere I looked there were flyers and posters advertising it, and details were published in the local newspapers.

Whilst I was certainly looking forward to seeing Roy Hammer & Die Pralinées play in the evening, from a news point of view the highlight could well have been the opening of the new Ärztehaus opposite the station – a building containing a number of doctors’ surgeries, a chemist and a bank.

Except that when I went to the opening at 11am, I, along with other members of the press and the public were politely told that the opening was by invitation only, and myself and two other photographers were definitely not on the list of people being allowed in.

Eventually we found out that a public opening was taking place on the stage at the station at 11.30am. [Read more…]

How Oberursel is planning to re-develop the station area with the help of its citizens

The discussion taking place in Oberursel about the re-development of the station area is not new.  In fact, it has been going on for several decades as Mayor Hans-Georg Brum reminded local residents at a meeting in the Stadthalle this week.  He had even brought along a copy of the 1976 traffic concept to prove it!

But whilst some members of the town council may still be reminding people of how expensive the plan was to put a tunnel under the Nassauer Straße and join the road coming from Bad Homburg with the Weingärten by-pass, others – indeed a group of ordinary people from the town – had brought along suggestions of their own. The tale of the Ausziehgleis and the Pförtnerampel

One of the most hotly discussed topics in Oberursel this month must surely be the re-development of an area called the “Bahnhofsareal”.  Roughly speaking, that is the area between the flyover at the “Drei Hasen” where the Homburger Landstraße meets the Nassauer Straße, and the other end of the Nassauer Straße where it almost – but not quite – joins up with the Weingärtenumgehung.  Not quite, unless you include the temporary road that was put in place for the Hessentag to give residents access to the area.

In the middle of this area is the newly restored station, hence the term “Bahnhofsareal” – the area around the station.

The future of that area is not just being discussed now, it has been a topic of discussion and in the town council for the past 25 years, as Councillor Dr. Eggert Winter of the SPD reminded councillors last week before launching into a blow-by-blow account of the various plans that had been on the cards in that time, including plans for a tunnel under the area and closing the level crossing at the end of the Adenauerallee, and a new station combining both S-Bahn and U-Bahn tracks.

“It is good in part when things take longer, because sometimes you notice that the things that you have decided upon are not good”, he said. [Read more…]

Camp King archive officially opened

Last Saturday (16th March, 2013) saw a day arrive that many people associated with the Camp King area had been waiting for, none more so than local history Manfred Kopp, when the Camp King archive finally moved into its permanent home at the “Kinderhaus”.

Except that the “Kinderhaus” was not always called that.  On the map it may now have the address “Jean-Sauer-Weg 2”, but it was originally called “Haus am Wald” and had the address “Außerhalb 7”.  In the post-war period it was called “Haus Florida”, and the U.S. army later called it simply “Haus 997”.

At 11am a group gathered around the entrance to the cellar, next to the artwork “Don’t look back”, among them Mayor Hans-Georg Brum and Deputy Principle Officer of the U.S. Consulate General in Frankfurt, Charisse Phillips. [Read more…]

Camp King archive to be officially opened on Saturday

You may know the building as “Haus am Wald” or as “Außerhalb 7”, maybe as “Haus Florida” or “Haus 997”.  However if you only moved to Oberursel in the last 15 years it is quite possible that you only know it as the “Kinderhaus”.

That building in Camp King, which was originally built in 1921 and has since been known by all of those names, it set to become the permanent home of the Camp King archive, where all of the information collected about the area can be made available in future to historians and school classes.

The official opening will take place on Saturday, 16th March, 2013 at 11pm, and after a speech by Mayor Hans-Georg Brum his predecessor Gerd Krämer will give a talk entitled “Erinnerung braucht Ort” (remembrance needs places). [Read more…]
