Are your First Aid skills a little rusty?

Before you can take a driving test in Germany, you have to attend a course called “Unterweisung in lebensrettenden Sofortmaßnahmen” which takes about a day and is intended to ensure that all new drivers have basic first aid skills.  There is also a full-blown first aid course available which lasts two days, but is only compulsory for certain types of vehicle.

So when the automobile club ADAC recently commissioned a survey on first aid skills as part of the 150th anniversary of the founding of the Red Cross, there were some shocking results.  Whilst 73% of those asked felt they were able to offer first aid, 68% did not know the steps they should take if they were first on the scene at an accident.  9% did not even know the emergency number (in Germany “112”).

In practical tests, just over half of those surveyed were unable to put someone in the recovery position [Read more…]

Car collided with traffic lights – driver fled

In the early hours of Friday morning (22nd March, 2013), a Daimler Chrysler car driving by a 25-year-old woman hit a set of traffic lights whilst making a left turn off the Frankfurter Landstraße.

Instead of stopping and dealing with the damage, the driver continued on her way, but was soon found by police.  It was then ascertained that she had been under the influence of alcohol at the time of the accident and a blood sample was taken.  She had also been slightly injured in the accident.

The damage is estimated at €10,000.

Chemist shop broken into – witnesses sought

Detectives in Bad Homburg are asking people to come forward who may have witnessed a break-in at a chemist shop in the Adenauerallee on the night of 19th/20th March, 2013.

The thieves were able to get away with a safe containing cash and some medicines.  They entered the show by force through a side entrance before searching the shop and store areas.  The safe was stolen from one of the side rooms.  Police believe that due to the size of the safe (100x80x40cm) several people were necessary to transport it.  The damage caused is put at €250, although no information has been given as to the value of the contents.

Anyone with information is asked to call detectives in Bad Homburg on 06172 1200.

Left turn caused 5-figure damage

The 73-year-old driver of a VW Passat was travelling along the Gablonzer Straße on Wednesday, 20th March, 2013, having come from the Weingärtenumgehung when he decided to turn left into the Zimmersmühlenweg.  Here he ignored a Mazda travelling in the opposite direction which had right-of-way.  The two cars collided, causing €30,000 of damage.

The tale of the Ausziehgleis and the Pförtnerampel

One of the most hotly discussed topics in Oberursel this month must surely be the re-development of an area called the “Bahnhofsareal”.  Roughly speaking, that is the area between the flyover at the “Drei Hasen” where the Homburger Landstraße meets the Nassauer Straße, and the other end of the Nassauer Straße where it almost – but not quite – joins up with the Weingärtenumgehung.  Not quite, unless you include the temporary road that was put in place for the Hessentag to give residents access to the area.

In the middle of this area is the newly restored station, hence the term “Bahnhofsareal” – the area around the station.

The future of that area is not just being discussed now, it has been a topic of discussion and in the town council for the past 25 years, as Councillor Dr. Eggert Winter of the SPD reminded councillors last week before launching into a blow-by-blow account of the various plans that had been on the cards in that time, including plans for a tunnel under the area and closing the level crossing at the end of the Adenauerallee, and a new station combining both S-Bahn and U-Bahn tracks.

“It is good in part when things take longer, because sometimes you notice that the things that you have decided upon are not good”, he said. [Read more…]

Annabel I. crowned Fountain Queen

“The Queen is dead – long live the Queen!” might not have been the most subtle way of telling Vanessa I. that her reign as Fountain Queen (Brunnenkönigin) had come to an end, but it was with these words that Charmaine Weisenbach took the coronation ceremony from a carnival atmosphere back to the middle ages.

The evening had started with a performance of “We want to entertain you” by members of the “Academy of Stage Arts”, and entertain us they did with performances of hits like “Voulez Vos coucher avec moi” and “Time Warp”, but it was the topical performances by two completely different groups of performers that signalled the end of Vanessa’s year and the start of her successors, with Annabel’s identify being kept for almost the first two hours.

To see Vanessa off, the “Garde” (similar to majorettes) of the Bommersheim Carnival Club (BCV) performed one piece after another, starting with the youngest children and going from one age group to the next.

Before long, it was time for Vanessa to hold her last speech as Fountain Queen.  As ever, she spoke in rhyme.  “Nun vorbei ist meine Zeit, die neue Königin steht bereit” she concluded (my time is over, the new Queen is standing by). [Read more…]
