Restricted train services on Saturday

On Saturday, 9th March, 2013 the U-Bahn line U3 will be closed between Bommersheim and Oberursel station from around 9am until 5pm to allow for tree-cutting work to take place.

Trains from Frankfurt will terminate at “Weißkirchen Ost”, from where a replacement bus service will take passengers to the stops between Bommersheim and Hohemark.

Temporary bus stops have been set up near to the train stations and passengers travelling towards Frankfurt should be aware that the buses will leave the Hohemark terminus around 5 minutes earlier than the train would.

This market takes place on the 1st floor and has a larger selection of books than the monthly one, so there are usually foreign-language books there as well.

Friday 10-1 & 3-6
Saturday 10-1

Maria Jung – 95th Birthday

Happy Birthday - ©Can Stock Photo Inc. / flamingoladyCongratulations to Frau Maria Jung of Oberursel who is 95 years old today.

Once upon a time, there was a sports field…

… and that field was one of the most discussed topics in Oberursel.

In fact, it was one of the decisive issues the last time the town council was elected, when the CDU and FDP were in favour of selling it to fund the new swimming pool, SPD, the Green party and OBG were against doing so.

How fast the parties can change their position became apparent last year, when the SPD and Green party sided with the CDU in a vote on the funding of the swimming pool project with a clause stating that the sports field would be sold if an alternative could not be found by the middle of 2013. The wednesday market is now on the Epinay-Platz

The weekly Wednesday market in Oberursel moves to its new permament home on the Epinay-Platz today, where there is more room for expansion than at the Rathausplatz.  This also means that the stalls are not so close to the surrounding shops and also will not have to be move temporarily when other events are being prepared in that area.

The Saturday market remains on the Marktplatz.

From the Ausländerbeirat…

When the Ausländerbeirat met on Monday (4th March, 2013), they may not have been prepared for the number of guests who turned up to put their questions to them. It may not sound that many, but those 6 (six) broke the record for past half year.

One of the reasons for this was a group from the Ahmadiyya community to ask for the committee’s support for their plans for a mosque in Oberursel. Currently the community have prayer rooms in the Dornbachstraße which they say are now at full capacity for their services with many of those who worship representing the 4th generation of families that have moved to Germany in the past.

If possible they would like to build a mosque in the town, rather than convert an existing building, and added that they were looking for support and not for funding. Franz Zenker, chairing the meeting, promised that the committee would support them and pass on their request to the town’s executive. [Read more…]

Traffic lights on the Frankfurter Landstrasse

This short film shows the Frankfurter Landstraße, to the south-west of Oberursel, where a new Edeka supermarket recently opened.

Since then motorists and residents have been complaining that the traffic lights into the store’s car park are not synchronised with those at the corner of the Kurmainzer Straße in Weißkirchen, causing tailbacks during the daily rush hour.

To make matters worse, the right-hand turn land has been blocked off as well.

And whilst motorists are complaining about the traffic jams, U-Bahn passengers say that they have to wait longer now to cross the road.

I decided to go and take a look and see for myself how long it took to get from the bus stop across to the train station.  I waited for the green man to go out so that I could  time how long the wait is between pressing the button and being allowed to cross.  After around 30 seconds the train to Oberursel left, and in all I had to wait about a minute so catching the train may well depend on if the bus is on time and how fast you walk.

The town hall have said in their online forum that the traffic lights are still provisional and that they hope to have a new system in place during the first half of 2013.  Until then, the evening traffic jam is here to stay.
