Road closures and railway services

Roadworks sign - ©Can Stock Photo Inc. / RedKoalaA number of roadworks and a reduction in railway services is set to affect Oberursel and the surrounding area in the coming weeks.

The main problem for car drivers will probably be the closure of the B456 between the junction with the L3003 (the exit to Oberstedten) and the crossroads in Dornholzhausen.  This section is due to be closed from Friday, 11th July until Sunday, 20th July, 2014.

Not only may local residents expect some noise, as the work will continue at night and the weekends, but there is a local festival (“Kerb”) taking placed in Oberstedten with additional road closures to be expected there as well. [Read more…]

Kurmainzer Straße partially closed until September

Roadworks sign - ©Can Stock Photo Inc. / RedKoalaDue to work taking place on water pipes and part of the pavement being replaced, the Kurmainzer Straße will be closed to traffic travelling from Steinbach to the Frankfurter Landstraße between the Mauerweg and Mauerfeldfeldstraße from Monday, 26th May, 2014 until approximately the end of September.

Traffic will be diverted instead along the Oberurseler Straße and the Ludwig-Erhard-Straße.

Bus route 251 travelling towards Nord-West-Zentrum will also be diverted and use the same routes that the 41 an 42 take, stopping at “Weißkirchen-Ost”.

Road junction closed for re-surfacing

Roadworks sign - ©Can Stock Photo Inc. / RedKoalaThe junction of the Frankfurter Landstraße and Kurmainzer Straße will be closed from Monday, 7th October until Thursday, 10th October, 2013 to allow for re-surfacing work to take place.

During this time traffic will be diverted through Weißkirchen along the Urselbachstraße, An der Bleiche, Oberurseler Straße and Ludwig-Erhard-Straße, so extra time should be allowed for journeys along this route.

Access to the Edeka car park will still be possible for traffic coming from Oberursel.

Drunk driver injured in Weißkirchen

The 26-year-old driver of a Ford Cougar was travelling along the Kurmainzer Straße last Thursday night (7th March, 2013), when his car came off the road and hit a Honda Civic.

The driver, who police describe as being drunk, was slightly injured.  Police confiscated his driving license and took a blood sample.

Both cars were damaged considerably, with the damage estimated at €5,500.

From the Ausländerbeirat…

When the Ausländerbeirat met on Monday (4th March, 2013), they may not have been prepared for the number of guests who turned up to put their questions to them. It may not sound that many, but those 6 (six) broke the record for past half year.

One of the reasons for this was a group from the Ahmadiyya community to ask for the committee’s support for their plans for a mosque in Oberursel. Currently the community have prayer rooms in the Dornbachstraße which they say are now at full capacity for their services with many of those who worship representing the 4th generation of families that have moved to Germany in the past.

If possible they would like to build a mosque in the town, rather than convert an existing building, and added that they were looking for support and not for funding. Franz Zenker, chairing the meeting, promised that the committee would support them and pass on their request to the town’s executive. [Read more…]

Traffic lights on the Frankfurter Landstrasse

This short film shows the Frankfurter Landstraße, to the south-west of Oberursel, where a new Edeka supermarket recently opened.

Since then motorists and residents have been complaining that the traffic lights into the store’s car park are not synchronised with those at the corner of the Kurmainzer Straße in Weißkirchen, causing tailbacks during the daily rush hour.

To make matters worse, the right-hand turn land has been blocked off as well.

And whilst motorists are complaining about the traffic jams, U-Bahn passengers say that they have to wait longer now to cross the road.

I decided to go and take a look and see for myself how long it took to get from the bus stop across to the train station.  I waited for the green man to go out so that I could  time how long the wait is between pressing the button and being allowed to cross.  After around 30 seconds the train to Oberursel left, and in all I had to wait about a minute so catching the train may well depend on if the bus is on time and how fast you walk.

The town hall have said in their online forum that the traffic lights are still provisional and that they hope to have a new system in place during the first half of 2013.  Until then, the evening traffic jam is here to stay.

Accident in Weißkirchen – Lorry Driver sought

On Friday evening last week (25th January, 2013), a 22 year old man from Frankfurt was driving his BMW along the Kurmainzer Strasse travelling from Steinbach when he drove past the turning into the Weißkirchener Strasse which he had intended to take.

He continued a short distance along the road before turning across the road and into an entrance.  As he drove back onto the road he failed to notice a lorry with a trailer that was travelling towards Steinbach.

Although the BMW collided with the trailer, it appears that the lorry driver did not notice and continued on his journey.  All that is known about the lorry is that the trailer was white.

The damage to the BMW is estimated at around 7,000EUR.  No-one was injured.
