B456 closed this morning, one dead

The B456 road connecting Oberursel with Bad Homburg was closed this morning, Tuesday, 4th July, 2017, after an accident.
A 73-year-old man from Hanau was driving his BMW towards Dornholzhausen when, near the Oberstedten exit, he hit the oncoming traffic, first hitting a VW driven by a 60-year-old man. The VW hit the crash barrier and bounced back onto the road.
Meanwhile the BMW continued on the left-hand side of the road and hit another VW, driven by a 26-year-old woman from Bad Homburg, head on. Both drivers were stuck in their vehicles and had to be freed by the emergency services.
The 73-year-old was unconscious at the scene and later died in hospital. The 26-year-old was taken to hospital with serious injuries, although these are not said to be life-threatening.
Three ambulances, two emergency doctors and a number of police and the fire brigade all attended. The road was closed from 7am until 9.30am, causing a considerable amount of traffic to travel through Bad Homburg instead.

Road closures and railway services

Roadworks sign - ©Can Stock Photo Inc. / RedKoalaA number of roadworks and a reduction in railway services is set to affect Oberursel and the surrounding area in the coming weeks.

The main problem for car drivers will probably be the closure of the B456 between the junction with the L3003 (the exit to Oberstedten) and the crossroads in Dornholzhausen.  This section is due to be closed from Friday, 11th July until Sunday, 20th July, 2014.

Not only may local residents expect some noise, as the work will continue at night and the weekends, but there is a local festival (“Kerb”) taking placed in Oberstedten with additional road closures to be expected there as well. [Read more…]

B456 roadworks extended

The work on the B456 bridge across the L3003 (Niederstedter Straße) should have been completed by now, but has been extended until 20th December, 2013.

The contraflow system on the bridge and traffic lights below will remain in place for now.

Accident in roadworks on the B456

An accident occured in the roadworks on the B456 on Tuesday, 17th September 2013 at 11.25pm when a car travelling from Oberursel towards Bad Homburg crossed onto the other side of the road into the oncoming traffic.

The 29-year-old driver of a Scirocco was forced swerve to avoid a collision and came to a standstill at the exist to Oberstedten.  The 18-year-old driver of an Insignia behind him was also able to stop, but the car behild – also a Scirocco, driven by a 19-year-old – was unable to do so in time and hit the Insignia from behind.

The car that had initially caused the accident carried on its way to Bad Homburg without stopping.  The damage is estimated at around €11,000.

B456 bridge repairs to take place

Roadworks sign - ©Can Stock Photo Inc. / RedKoalaThis week work will begin on renewing the B456 bridge near the Niederstedter Weg (the road between Oberursel and Dornholzhausen) which is expected to take until mid-October.

During this time traffic turning off the B456 onto the L3003 will be regulated by traffic lights which may cause some delays.

One possible detour to avoid the area would be via the Kanonenstraße (L3004), however this too will be closed at times between 20th and 23rd August, 2013, to allow for tree felling to take place.

Drunk Driver landed in roadside ditch

A 43-year-old woman from the Odenwaldkreis was driving along the B456 towards Bad Homburg in her Kia Picanta last Sunday evening (28th April, 2013).  On leaving the road at the Oberstedten exit to join the L3003 the car slid of the road and landed in the roadside ditch.

Police discovered that the same person had previously caused an accident on the motorway near Offenbacher Kreuz and had damaged the crash barrier in the process.  They report that she was under the influence of a considerable amount of alcohol and after taking a blood sample her driving license was confiscated.

The damage is estimated at €3,500.

Winter weather stops Bulgarian trucker

The heavy snow fall on Tuesday (12th March, 2013) caused problems for one Bulgarian lorry drover who came off the road at the junction of the Niederstedter Straße and the B456 and got stuck in a snow drift.

He told police that he was unable to call for a breakdown truck to tow him back out, as he only had 50 Euro in cash with him.

It was one of the town’s employees who was out clearing snow that found a solution for the problem.  He suggested contacting the garden centre Kofler in Oberstedten, which had a tow truck capable of the job.  The owner of the garden centre came straight away and towed the lorry out of the drift, allowing the Bulgarian driver to continue on his way home.

The garden centre owner would not accept any money for his services, and was just happy to have been able to help.

B456 closed after serious accident

The B456 road was closed between the turning to Oberstedten and the crossing in Dornholzhausen last Friday, 14th December, 2012, following a head-on collision between a lorry and a BMW.

According to the police report the articulated lorry, loaded with coal, was travelling towards Oberursel when it crossed over to the other side of the road near the footbridge connecting the Tannenwaldallee for reasons as yet unknown.

There it hit a BMW head-on and broke through the crash barrier before ending up on its roof next to the road.

The 45-year old driver of the BMW was trapped in their car and had to be freed by rescue services before being taken to hospital with injuries described as “life threatening”.

The 41-year old driver of the articulated lorry was slightly injured.

Although the cause of the accident remains to be established, an initial police report suggested that the health of the lorry driver may have played a role.

An estimate of the damage was put at €120,000.
