From the Ausländerbeirat…

When the Ausländerbeirat met on Monday (4th March, 2013), they may not have been prepared for the number of guests who turned up to put their questions to them. It may not sound that many, but those 6 (six) broke the record for past half year.

One of the reasons for this was a group from the Ahmadiyya community to ask for the committee’s support for their plans for a mosque in Oberursel. Currently the community have prayer rooms in the Dornbachstraße which they say are now at full capacity for their services with many of those who worship representing the 4th generation of families that have moved to Germany in the past.

If possible they would like to build a mosque in the town, rather than convert an existing building, and added that they were looking for support and not for funding. Franz Zenker, chairing the meeting, promised that the committee would support them and pass on their request to the town’s executive. [Read more…]

Get on your bike and… go shopping!

With fresh snow on the ground and in some places still falling perhaps going shopping in Oberursel by bicycle was not the most pressing topic for many people last Sunday when the ADFC held their “Tag des Fahrrads” in the Stadthalle.

Over 400 people attended the event – significantly down on the 1,000 that had visited the previous year.

And yet shopping was one of the main topics this year and a debate on the very subject of going shopping by bicycle in Oberursel was held with the chairman of the forum for the self-employed (Fokus-O), Michael Reuter, the Mayor Hans-Georg Brum, Stefan Opitz from the project “Einkaufen-mit-dem-Rad.de” in Darmstadt and local cyclist Helga Hett. A new brochure for new residents

Anyone arriving in Oberursel registering at the town hall will from today receive a copy of the new edition of the “Bürgerbroschüre”.

The brochure contains information about the town itself such as its history, facts and figures, and basic information on the town’s administration.  But it also contains details of local shops and businesses, tourist attractions, clubs, school, churches and doctors.  Even a list of playgrounds.  In fact, probably most of the information that anyone moving to the town is likely to need in their first weeks or months here.

There is even a street map with a list of emergency phone numbers inside the back cover. [Read more…]

Tag des Fahrrads – The Day of the Bicycle

Sunday, 24th February, 2013 sees the return of “Oberursel fährt ab – Tag des Fahrrads” – an event organised by the town itself in co-operation with the ADFC.

Billed as a “bicycle and tourism fair”, the Stadthalle will play host to a combination of presentations, discussions, and a selection of stands from local dealers and tourism outlets.

The fair open at 11am, with a flea market for used bicycles taking place between 11.30am and 12.30pm.  Bicycles for sale have to be registered in advance on www.oberurselfaehrtab.de. [Read more…]

New signs for Oberursel’s town centre were unveiled in September, to help visitors to the town find their way around better.

The signs show the way to the U-Bahn stations, the car parks and public buildings.  The are colour-coded so that places in the old town (“Altstadt”) are anthracite (dark grey) whereas others are blue.

Another new addition is the “Shopping Lady” (inset in the photo), an icon showing the way to the main shopping area and guiding visitors around it.

The photo shows the mayor of Oberursel Hans-Georg Brum and Citymanager Wolfgang Bräutigam with one of the new signs.
