Why Oberursel can’t afford to build a new swimming pool

The Stadthalle was packed full on Wednesday evening for the “Bürgerversammlung” to discuss the new swimming pool.

It all started off quite well, with the mayor Hans-Georg Brum asking the question “if we don’t build it now, when will we?” and pointing out the value of the new indoor swimming pool for the schools in the town and in general for children, youths and older people, stressing the fact that it was not just for the swimming club (SCO) and the lifeguards (DLRG).

With a nod to the financial problems he asked the politicians in the town to stand behind the project, claiming that if everyone wants it to happen, somehow it will be possible.  For this he received a round of applause.

The next presentation was about the building itself, but finally led to the calculation of how the project is going to be financed.  For the first time, the public were shown a list of the pieces of land that are to be sold off to raise the capital.  Or at least, the roads in which these pieces of land are in.

Perhaps most interesting at this point was [Read more…]

Can Oberursel afford to build a new swimming pool?

The indoor swimming pool in Oberursel has now been closed for four years and is now probably one of the most discussed topics amongst the people and in particular the politicians in the town.

Last week it was on the agenda of the planning and environmental committee at the town hall, this week there is a Bürgerversammlung to update everyone on the current state of the planning and to allow people to put forward their views.  Next week the town council is due to vote on the project.  And various Bebauungspläne have been amended to allow for land to be sold off and built on to finance it all.

But it is the financial situation that remains the biggest question of all: can the town afford it? [Read more…]

25 Years of making Local History accessible

“History is not as boring as some people think… or as some teachers make it” – this is how the chairman of Oberursel’s town parliament Dr. Christoph Müllerleile commented on the 25th anniversary of the Vortaunusmuseum on Saturday afternoon.

The museum, which was first opened in June 1987, had invited local dignitaries and friends of the museum to celebrate the anniversary in the Seifenkisten (soap box) area, with several making congratulatory speeches.

Renate Messer, who runs the museum, opened the proceedings before handing over to Landrat (District Administrator) Ulrich Krebs.  He highlighted the unique local history that the area offers, such as the Oppidum Heidetränk celtic settlement and the Bommersheimer Burg – a castle that sadly no longer exists.

Oberursel’s Mayor Hans-Georg Brum highlighted the interest in such local museums, and in the feeling of “Heimat” in particular, in a World where everything seems to be closer together and long-established cultures and traditions begin to merge with each other. [Read more…]

Last day for Kern’s Geflügel after 40 years at the Market

After 40 years of serving fresh poultry and eggs at the market twice a week in Oberursel, Saturday morning marked the end of an era for Anke Gonidec-Kern and Kern’s Geflügel when she opened up her trailer for the last time.

In fact, Frau Gonidec-Kern took the stand over from her parents, making it a total of 60 years that her family have been coming to the market.  Now she is giving up the business on health grounds.

On the last day there were plenty of customers who came to the stand to buy their eggs and meat for the last time and just before 10am the mayor (Hans-Georg Brum) arrived with the city manager (Wolfgang Bräutigam) and market manager (Marlen Pauly) to present Frau Gonidec-Kern with a bouqet of flowers. District Office in Weißkirchen threatened with closure

The district office – Stadtteilbüro – in Weißkirchen is threatened with closure at the end of this year if funding to keep it open is not found.

Originally set up 2½ years ago as part of a project sponsored by the national office for migration and refugees (Bundesamt für Migration und Flüchtlinge), the office has one employee and offers a place to meet and activities for senior citizens, families, women and mothers.

Sponsorship of the project ends in August.  The town of Oberursel has agreed to provide funding to keep the office open until the end of the year which is located in the old town hall (Altes Rathaus).

The photo shows representatives of the initiative to keep the office open handing in a petition with 300 signatures to Mayor Hans-Georg Brum and Alderman Christof Fink, who have promised to look for a solution to the problem despite the difficult financial situation that the town is currently in.
