Richtfest – topping out the new swimming pool

Work stopped on the new swimming pool for a few hours last Wednesday afternoon (21st August, 2013) when the “Richtfest” – the topping-out ceremony – took place in the shell of the building.

Those present included  representatives from the town’s political parties, even those who had opposed the way the building is being financed, as well as the architect Dipl.-Ing. Detlef Sacker, the head of the company that will run the pool, Jürgen Funke, and Dr. Werner Freitag, president of the swimmers’ association in Hessen.  Hans Leimeister represented the local district council.

Mayor Hans-Georg Brum commented that it the building was not only the largest project that the town had ever undertaken, but it was also the one that had been discussed the most. [Read more…]

Graffiti sprayer caught

Oberursel’s police have been able to catch a young man who is now accused of causing damage to property (“Sachbeschädigung”), specifically the B455 underpass.

On Wednesday, 17th July, 2013 at around 2.20am police in the Altkönigstraße became aware of the 17-year-old carrying a rucksack who was stopped and searched.  Police were patrolling the area due to the increase in car break-ins that had taken place in previous days.

As the young man was not carrying any form of identity with him, he was taken to the police station.  Although the patrol were not able to find damage to any cars, the rucksack was found to contain an assortment of graffiti equipment including spraycans and disposable gloves.  The man’s hands were also covered in fresh colour stains.  The cans and gloves were kept as evidence and his hands where photographed.

A short time later, after he had been released, another police patrol discovered fresh graffiti in the area near the B455 underpass.  A comparison of the paint used, the colours on the young’s hands and the particular type of shoes that had left footprints at the crime scene allowed them to conclude that he could be brought in connection with the graffiti and he was subsequently charged.

Police are now trying to find out if he is responsible for any other graffiti in the area.

Altkönigstraße closed on Friday

The Altkönigstraße will once again be closed between the Theodor-Heuss-Straße and Rotbornstraße on Friday, 21st June, 2013 from 7am until 6pm to allow for work on the new swimming pool building to take place.  A diversion will be in operation.

Altkönigstraße to remain closed, Swimming Pool to be blown up

The Altkönigstraße is to remain closed between the Theodor-Heuss-Straße and Rotbornstraße until Friday, 7th June, 2013, while building work on the new swimming pool takes place.  The diversion will also remain in place.

The shell of the old indoor swimming pool building

On Tuesday, 4th June, 2013 at 11am the remaining shell of the old indoor swimming pool building will be demolished using explosives.  During this time the area will be cordoned off with no-one allowed inside a 150m radius of the building except local residents who are required to stay indoors with their shutters closed and on the far side of the house to the explosion.  Cars should be removed from the area.

The 120m ring of concrete that is left standing is under such pressure, that the structural engineer responsible fears that if diggers where to cut into it, it may release that pressure and break apart uncontrollably.  Instead seven holes have been drilled into each of the supporting legs and these are filled with explosives totalling around 50kg.  The ring itself will be cut at four places by plasma beams at the same time as the explosives go off.

The result will be 4 pieces of concrete each 30m long, which should just fall to the ground if everything goes according to plan.  The 150m safety radius is a precaution in case that does not happen, or if parts of the concrete break off and fly away.  Around 1,000 tonnes of concrete is currently left standing in the shell of the building.

No parking no waiting here during the explosion
