Burnt toast causes false alarm in Bommersheim

“As black as a raven” is how police are describing a burnt piece of toast that was responsible for emergency services attending a false alarm on Wednesday, 13th March, 2013 in Bommerhseim.

The alarm was raised at 9.25pm when a burning small was reported to be coming from a house in the Bommersheimer Straße.  The fire brigades from both Bommersheim and Stierstadt attended, as did an ambulance and the police.

However rather than finding a fire they discovered an unlocked door to a flat, where the burnt toast lay in the kitchen next to the appliance in which it had been toasted.

The occupant of the flat was not present and police are unable to say anything more about the toasting process.

Apparently no damage was caused.

Why pay for things that no-one uses?

Why does the local district that Oberursel belongs to, the Hochtaunuskreis pay into a culture fund that does not benefit the area? That is the question currently being asked by the „Freie Wähler Hochtaunus“ (FWG, which roughly translates as the association of independent voters).

They claim that each year Hochtaunuskreis pays hundreds of thousands of Euro into a fund called the „Kulturfond RheinMain“ and to other institutions, although no evidence exists that they either benefit the Hochtaunuskreis area or are used by people living there.

As savings have to be made to the district budget, they are calling for the district council (Kreistag) to stop those payments and cancel their membership of the funds and institutions accordingly.

However the parties who hold the majority in the council, the CDU and SPD, have not taken this suggestion on board, leading to the FWG claiming that the tax payer is supporting „prestige objects“. They also point out that there are even mayors in the district who belong to those parties, who support the idea, although this may come as no surprise as at the end of the day it is the local towns who foot the bill through their „Kreisumlage“, a contribution that they have to make to the district budget.

Their motion in the district parliament on 4th March, 2013, was defeated by the other parties in the council.  They did, however, agree to reduce the share that the district has in the fund.

Camp King archive to be officially opened on Saturday

You may know the building as “Haus am Wald” or as “Außerhalb 7”, maybe as “Haus Florida” or “Haus 997”.  However if you only moved to Oberursel in the last 15 years it is quite possible that you only know it as the “Kinderhaus”.

That building in Camp King, which was originally built in 1921 and has since been known by all of those names, it set to become the permanent home of the Camp King archive, where all of the information collected about the area can be made available in future to historians and school classes.

The official opening will take place on Saturday, 16th March, 2013 at 11pm, and after a speech by Mayor Hans-Georg Brum his predecessor Gerd Krämer will give a talk entitled “Erinnerung braucht Ort” (remembrance needs places). [Read more…]
