Gymnasium Oberursel – A Grammar School with a Future

For the past few years there has been a building site in the Berliner Straße while work was carried out on the Grammar School (Gymnasium).  At times the road was closed to traffic or narrowed.  The pupils were split across three locations.  And I learnt a new word – the green strips on the dark grey façade are called “Einsprengsel”.

But now the work is over and the school proudly opened up their new buildings to the public last Saturday, during which the key was ceremoniously handed over by the architects.

The morning began with the headmaster, Volker Räuber, welcoming the guests and highlighting the positive aspects of the new buildings: more space, modern IT connections to allow children to carry on working on projects at home, a large hall with professional sound and lighting, a media library, and three underground sports courts.  “Oberursel Grammar School is a school of the future”, he said, continuing “some other schools in the area can only dream of buildings like these”.  He also thanked the neighbours for their patience during the building phase. From the Ausländerbeirat…

Yesterday evening the Ausländerbeirat met in Oberursel’s town hall again and once again I went along to observe the proceedings.  I have to say, that I came away with somewhat mixed feelings.

My most positive observation of the evening was that the chairman, Franz Zenker, was more confident in the role and far more well prepared than at the previous sittings.  He demonstrated this in particular by reporting from the finance committee with his impressions of their last sitting, and was able to explain things in some detail.  He was also able to give a list of topics being discussed in their next sitting, although as I have noted previously, the committee just listens to the list without any comment or discussion.

Other members of the committee who were to report on other sub-committees of the town’s parliament were not as forthcoming with their thoughts. [Read more…]

St.Martin’s Lantern Procession with Helen Doron Early English

Helen Doron Early English’s Mini-Kindergarten is holding a lantern procession for children between the ages of 18 months and 4 years on Thursday, 8th November at 5pm.

The meeting point is at the upper end of the green strip in the Adenauerallee, in front of house number 21.

They will be accompanied by St.Martin on his pony for a short walk to a bonfire where they will sing sings in both English and German.  Warm drinks will be available as will typical St.Martin’s “Weckmänner” – a sort of gingerbread man made out of dough.

Guests are welcome, although a donation is requested from anyone who does not attend the kindergarten.

Toy Bazaar in Oberstedten

A “toy bazaar” is being held at the Taunushalle in Oberstedten on Sunday, 11th November, 2012.

Organised by the Aktion Kinderparadies e.V., it will be open from 10am until noon and the items sold will be toys, books, multimedia and toy vehicles suitable for children up to 12 years old.

What makes this bazaar slightly different, is that it is “sortiert”, ie. the vendors do not have a table each, but instead the toys are sorted by type, making it easier to find something without having to visit every table!

The organisation receives 15% of the proceeds.

To find the Taunushalle, set your navigation equipment to “Landweg 6″ in Oberursel.

The nearest bus stop is “Landwehr” on route 41.

Bicycle shop broken into

A bicycle shop in the Holzweg was broken into in the early hours of last Monday morning when someone broke the shop window with a hammer and stole the mountain bike that was at the front of the display.

A witness approached the thief who then proceeded to ride towards the witness.  The two collided, the witness being hurting their arm.  The thief then left the bicycle behind and ran off in the direction of the old town.

He is described as slim, of Mediterranean appearance, around 16 to 18 years old and approximately 1.65m tall. He was wearing a black jumper with back tracksuit trousers.
