Archives for March 2013

Camp King archive officially opened

Last Saturday (16th March, 2013) saw a day arrive that many people associated with the Camp King area had been waiting for, none more so than local history Manfred Kopp, when the Camp King archive finally moved into its permanent home at the “Kinderhaus”.

Except that the “Kinderhaus” was not always called that.  On the map it may now have the address “Jean-Sauer-Weg 2”, but it was originally called “Haus am Wald” and had the address “Außerhalb 7”.  In the post-war period it was called “Haus Florida”, and the U.S. army later called it simply “Haus 997”.

At 11am a group gathered around the entrance to the cellar, next to the artwork “Don’t look back”, among them Mayor Hans-Georg Brum and Deputy Principle Officer of the U.S. Consulate General in Frankfurt, Charisse Phillips. [Read more…]

Thefts at the bulding site and the chemist

Over the weekend of 8th-11th March, 2013, around 600 litres of diesel was stolen from the tanks of two vehicles at a building site in the Karl-Herrmann-Flach-Straße.  Police do not know how the thieves managed to transport this amount of fuel and are asking for anyone who can help with the enquiry to call 06171 62400.

On the same weekend thieves broke into a chemist shop in Camp-King-Allee between Saturday afternoon and Monday morning.  They forced the door open and entered both the shop floor area and the store, although it appears they did not take anything.  The damage is estimated at €1,500.

Red Cross First Aid Day

This coming Saturday the Red Cross is holding a “First Aid Day”, to make people aware of how important it is to keep first aid knowledge and skills up to date.

There will be an information stand in Oberursel at the corner of the Vorstadt and Kumeliusstraße between 10am and 2pm where people will be able to see if they still know how to stop a wound from bleeding or how to resuscitate a casualty.  They will also be able to find out when the next first aid courses in the area take place.

A week of learning about the cinema

It was a different type of school outing that led many of the children in Oberursel to visit the bluebox portstraße at the begnning of March.  The bluebox, which normally hosts the Tuesday night cinema and the monthly Kinderkino was taking part in the “SchulKino Wochen” project, which gives school children and insight into how things in the cinema work.

A strange thought maybe, but in the days of home cinema systems, there are probably a good number of children who have never been to a cinema before to watch a film being projected into a big screen. [Read more…]

Winter weather stops Bulgarian trucker

The heavy snow fall on Tuesday (12th March, 2013) caused problems for one Bulgarian lorry drover who came off the road at the junction of the Niederstedter Straße and the B456 and got stuck in a snow drift.

He told police that he was unable to call for a breakdown truck to tow him back out, as he only had 50 Euro in cash with him.

It was one of the town’s employees who was out clearing snow that found a solution for the problem.  He suggested contacting the garden centre Kofler in Oberstedten, which had a tow truck capable of the job.  The owner of the garden centre came straight away and towed the lorry out of the drift, allowing the Bulgarian driver to continue on his way home.

The garden centre owner would not accept any money for his services, and was just happy to have been able to help.

The Scouts need new leaders – urgently!

The catholic Scouts in Oberursel, the DPSG (Deutsche Pfadfinderschaft Sankt Georg), have a big problem – they urgently need new leaders for their Scout Group.

So much so, in fact, that they started a campaign which has seen newspaper interviews and even advertising boards being rented to find volunteers to join the group.

In the end, five interested people who live in the town turned up to an information evening about the group and the Scouts on Thursday evening (14th March, 2013). [Read more…]
